For a political commentator of the post-independent history of Congress in Kerala, it is impossible to forget the emergence of Kerala Students Union and Youth Congress during the 60s and 70s. Both these organizations played a pivotal role in rejuvenating an aging Congress in Kerala and the rest of India. Today not everyone knows the fact that the central point of this big student-youth movement was an idealist young man M.A.John, the founding father of KSU. While the first ever elected Communist government in the world was in power in Kerala in 1957, while the young students were all activists in the Communist Student Movement (SF), John swam against the tide and formed the Kerala Students Union, supporting the Congress Party, which was to emerge as a powerhouse for Congress in Kerala in the coming years.

M.A.John is expelled from DIC(K) (11 March 2006)

The recent developemts in Kerala Politics have made another impact in the political life of M.A.John. Until a couple of weeks ago the general perception has been that an LDF/DIC(K) alliance would sweep the incoming assmebly polls. But CPI(M) Politburo vetoed such an alliance. UDF leaders then have been in touch with DIC(K) for an alliance. MA John had been always against such an alliance. For months DIC(K) have been talking against Oommen Chandy�s rule and the govt. How can suddenly take a U-turn and campaign for the same UDF?

MA John was not going to support an alliance of UDF/DIC. That would be a MLA alliance. Party supporters do not like such an alliance. KSU(I) workers have been clashing with Chandy's police even last month!!

This being the case, it remains a big puzzle to the political pundits as well as the layman, why M.A.John did not become the party president, minister or even an MLA! Why he was expelled from Congress many times, why he was kept away from the limelight? Yet another puzzle is the question why he didn't join any other party, in spite of being suspended from Congress many times! The early colleagues of M.A.John who were in KSU and Youth Congress, have all become MLAs,MPs and several of them ministers in the State Cabinet. The puzzle can only be resolved when one understands the degradation and deterioration of the political parties in India, in the 50 years after independence!

Today, some of the news magazines are focussing again on M.A.John. Some have interviewed him at his Kurianad house, which in fact is a library - which other political figure in India has a collection of 60,000 books? Some have bluntly asked him about the feeling of not becoming anything in Congress in spite of devoting the whole life to the party. From his side, John replied : his only sorrow was the plight of Congress party in Kerala today!

During the70s, when the office-bearers of Congress in Kerala tried to outcast John, many sincere KSU and Congress workers stood behind M.A.John. Most have left the political scene - there was no room for sincere people in Kerala politics. The KSU and Youth Congress crowd which immensely benefitted from John's vision and earlier leadership, preferred to forget him. Some even tried to erase his role in the formation of KSU. Some sympathizers didn't have the courage to come out open at the right time.

With this backgorund, today in this internet era, former Congress /KSU workers scattered around the world are uniting through the World Wide Web and deciding to bring out the facts to the public.

Thousands of sincere KSU/Congress workers have selflessly devoted their time and energy for the organization. International Forum of former Congress Parivarthanavadikal salute you all! You have tried to uphold an ideal and support a political figure whom many considered to be the most original political voice in India since Mahatma Gandhi and Nethaji Bose.
