The Swan

-- Elizabeth Egloff

Designer's Notes:

The Swan is a story of a woman who falls in love with a swan, and out of love with her boyfriend.  It is in the style of magical realism.  The action follows the development of the relationship between Dora and the Swan, as she attempts to nurse him back to health in her living room.  This happens as her boyfriend, Kevin, looks on, helpless to stop it, but at the same time, unable to leave.

The lighting design for this piece needed to include opportunities for realistic lighting that could then be twisted into surreal images.  Several practical lighting fixtures were introduced, which together with the sunlight coming through the upstage window served to give variation within the realistic lighting.  This was then twisted by adding in intense color washes and very extreme top lighting angles, effects which could not be produced by any of the realistic light sources.  Yet another twist was then added by producing effects similar to the non-realistic ones, but this time using the realistic lighting sources.
