Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat- Andrew LLoyd Webber *Winner - Column Award for Best Lighting Design of a Musical
Designer's Notes: The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor dreamcoat begins with all of Joseph’s family in Canaan. Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers and finds himself in Potiphar’s household. When Potiphar catches his wife seducing Joseph he throws him in jail where he develops a reputation as a dream interpreter. This brings him to the attention of Pharoah, who looks amazingly like Elvis. When Joseph successfully interprets Pharoahs dreams to save Egypt from famine he is well rewarded. In this production, all of this action happens on a single set. Thus the lighting became very important to help define the different locations. Canaan uses only the DS area and I kept the upper part of the pyramid dark so we get more of a focus on the DS sand dunes and palm trees. The transition to Potiphar’s home is most dramatic with strong up lights and back lights through the doors in the up stage wall which were opened for the first time. I used lots of strong side light also to compliment the Fosse-esque choreography in this segment. Then when Joseph is thrown in jail, he sits quietly in the light from an overhead grill and a single candle to give him hope. Finally, with the transition to Pharoah’s Egypt we get to see the whole pyramid lit up and framed by rope light, to give a Vegas touch to the place. Three Varilite VL1000’s also gave a little extra punch and pizzazz. To highlight the lighting in this piece we used a smoke machine hidden under the steps of the pyramid, which sent smoke out through the steps themselves and a hazer which we placed in the fire pit which also contained a silk flame effect unit for a vary realistic looking fire. (Unfortunately these effects were not kept running during the picture call.)
