Charlotte's Web-- Robinette Designer's Notes: In creating this set, I decided that it would be fun if the children in the audience could see some of the magic of the set changing before their eyes, rather than closing the curtain, and letting them sit and get bored during the scene change. This also gave the children involved with the show a chance to experience a different method of changing scenery. All of the scene changes were done by the animals, in full view of the audience. With this in mind, I devised the barn exterior which you can see in the pictures of Act I.. This included a hole in the barn, for a center stage entrance for Wilbur. We first meet Wilbur when he wiggles, tail first, out of the hole. For Act two, this structure spun around and opened up a hidden hinged flat, which together with a separate piece that rolled on in place of the house unit stage right, created the interior or the barn. Charlotte’s web is in the loft, in the corner of the original barn unit. This was created with painted lines on black felt, which also provided a place for Charlotte to hide before her entrance. For Act three, the barn unit spun around again, and was moved upstage, to become the back wall of a tent at the fair. The stage right barn unit spun and moved center to become the wall of the stall where Charlotte spins her famous web, the one which wins Wilbur the prize. This web was created using a more sheer fabric, as it did not need to mask anything, and costume pearl beads. This created a web which looked more showy, and delicate. The changes in lettering were accomplished by adding overlays with hidden hooks and Velcro. At the end of the show, we are back in the barn, this time with no web, but the rope on which the web had been stretched leaves a place for her friends to hang the ribbon which she helped Wilbur to win.
