Black Coffee

- Agatha Christie

Designer's Notes:

What do you do when someone presents you with a script which requires three doors, a set of French doors, a fire place, and a bookcase, to be performed in a space which measures 20’ x 25’ wall to wall?  I said, “no problem” and then I went to work. With a little help from some volunteers, we created this set.

Because the audience is so close in this space, all of the details had to look good.  All of the doors were working units.  I used foam to create the complex molding around the tops of the wall units.  The chair railing had to be real wood because of the fact that this space was used as a children’s class space during the week between performances.  The columns are made of concrete forms and foam detailing. The floor was painted to look like wood grain, an effect which was so successful that some audience members felt compelled to get down and touch it after the performance to see if it really was real.
