Designer's Notes:

Be Careful What You Wish For is an original script written for one performer for an elementary school audience.  In it we see the development of the main character, Jessica Sue, as she comes to an understanding that doing whatever it takes to get what you want can sometimes have unexpected results.

The setting is inside Jessica’s mind, which needed to provide the flexibility to suggest a classroom, a car interior, and a birthday party, as well as Jessica’s own room.  It also had to be highly portable to allow for touring by only two people.  Aesthetically we also thought it was important that the set reflect the turmoil and nastiness of Jessica’s mind, without getting too dark and nasty.

I achieved these goals be going with a found object motif.  I decided that all of the objects in Jessica’s mind would look like the junk which a child might have found and put together out of the garage perhaps,  to represent objects in her imagination.  They were then painted in bright, kid colors but with an imperfect paint job as though Jessica had done the painting herself.  The large labels in childlike lettering were added to allow for a little bit of symbolism, as seen in the “Vanity”, as well as accommodating Jessica’s own terminology for things such as her “tool box”.  The red sticks, which outline the space, were an easy to transport element that helped to delineate the interior of Jessica’s mind as well as the stage space itself.  This was especially necessary when the show was toured to spaces such as school cafeterias, where there was not a stage proper.
