Cat on a Hot Tin Roof- Tennessee Williams
Designer's Notes: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is the story of a southern family and their struggles with the roles which life has defined for them and the lies and deceptions they live with. The setting is the family estate, the occasion is Big Daddy’s birthday party. And the twist is that Big Daddy is dying of cancer and his family have kept this from him – until now. All of the action takes place in the bedroom of Big Daddy’s son Brick and his wife Maggie. It starts in the early evening just before sunset and progresses through the early night. In this production it was decided to use the existing unique structure of the Watertower theatre for the backdrop of the action. The many door openings were filled with translucent panels which, when lit together could provide a sense of sky behind the setting. . I lit each panel with a three-color wash, to create the sense of the sun setting into the night sky, using a combination of techniques for different panels because of the different requirements of the backstage space. In addition the panels in the top row of the back wall were backlit with color scrollers, to provide for silhouettes of various characters not scene on stage, but clearly part of the action. This allowed us to comment on the action and create a more surrealistic emphasis at key points in the show. More Shows |
