REFLECTIONS ON
STANDARD IV
As I read over Standard IV, the first thing that comes to my mind is assessing the technology usage in the classroom.  It only makes sense that in progression with the other standards that after implementing technology into the curriculum that you find a way to assess its usage.  The hardest thing about assessing the usage of technology is that their is really no right or wrong answer.  If the technology is being used effectively, a comprehensive system of evaluation must be devised.  You must not only look at how nice the project looks, but the content behind it.  The assessment pieces created should look to answer the questions:  What has the student learned and what role did technology have in the learning process?
I selected Ahn's article to go along with Standard IV because the E-Portfolio system implemented by my school district has an assessment component that allows you to design various rubrics to support the lessons that you within the program for the students.  Students can access this program, look at the assignment requirments, check the assessment criteria, submit completed assignments, and keep an open line of communication with the teacher via the one-on-one message board.  By utilizing this program, it allows me to become much more effective as a teacher because as I use the program to create my lessons, I can also create the assessment piece as well.
I feel that assessment of technology is an area that teachers need more professional development in.    Assessing technology integrated assignments can be a difficult task for those who are not accustomed to it.  It is very easy to forget about the content when a student displays things wonderfully.  One must learn to "sift through the smoke" in order to evaluate true learning.

Artifact One for Standard IV:  Brochure Rubric

This artifact was created as a classroom resource for my 6th grade Social Studies class and meets the requirements for TF- IV.A.  In this project, students were asked to create a travel brochure for the ancient city of Babylon.  After reading a short skit in class, the students were responsible for sifting through the script to find key points that should be included in their brochure.  They then used Microsoft Publisher to create their brochure.  Included you will find the lesson plan and rubrics for the project created on our school E-portfolio program and one of the brochures that one of my students created.

Artifact Two For Standard IV:
Thematic Lesson & Rubric

This artifact was selected because it specifically addresses TF - IV.C.  For one of my courses, I was asked to create a thematic health unit.  I have selected the portion of the thematic lesson that requires students to research various things about drugs and alcohol.  The students were then asked to create a Power Point Presentation and present their findings to the entire class.  Also included is the rubric that I created to assess their presentations.  I feel that this lesson best embodies Standard IV because the assessment component created not only focuses on the content of the presentation, but also assesses the technology usage.
