Outsiders Unit
Katie Phillips
Bullying and harassment is becoming such an epidemic in schools that many middle schools throughout the country have actually implimented the Olweus Bullying Program to try to reduce the problem. I feel that a book such as The Outsiders can teach students about the problems and consequences of bullying from the point of view of someone they can relate to and empathize with. This can help students to become more empowered and willing to take action against bullying and harrassment and try to put an end to it. By doing so maybe we can stop harassment from escalating to the point of arguments, physical violence, and even school shootings. Through the events of the books the students will learn about bullying, harassment, and and friendship. Through the lessons they will learn about different aspects of reading, writing, and listening.

Nothing Gold Can Stay
By Robert Frost

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower,
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.
