I. Introduction to Lesson:

A.  Wisconsin State Standards and Benchmarks: A.8.4, A.8.2, B.8.1, C.8.2, C.8.3

B.    Purpose: To review previous lesson and compare and contrast characteristics of individual characters.

 

II. Objectives: Students will review happenings of chapter five and demonstrate compare and contrast skills.

 

III. Procedures

A.     Materials Needed: copy of the book The Outsiders, handout containing activity five, reading guide, overhead projector, overhead markers.

B.     Anticipatory Set: Teacher will begin by discussing with class reading guide questions from chapter five.

C.     Lesson Activities: Class will begin by discussing reading guide questions from chapter five. After questions have been discussed a plot log (see lesson 1) for chapter five will be completed. After plot log has been completed students will get into groups of two or three (no more than three students per group) and complete activity five. This should take about 15 minutes. After all students finish activity the class will form a discussion circle with their desks and discuss the answers. This will be done as an open forum or discussion group with students freely giving their opinions about the topics at hand. This discussion should last about 10-15 minutes. After discussion group is finished students should hand in their papers (one paper per student, not one per group) containing activities four and five and move their desks back to their original places.

D.    Culminating Activity: Students will be assigned to read chapter six for homework, complete reporter’s notepad portion of activity six.

 

IV. Closure: Teacher will explain what students are filling out notepad for and explain that they should have ideas ready for second part of activity six, as they will be writing and evaluating rough drafts in next class. At this time students may ask any questions about activities done in class, the novel, or the homework assignment.
