I. Introduction to Lesson:

A.  Wisconsin State Standards and Benchmarks: A.8.2, A.8.4, B.8.2, C.8.2,

B.    Purpose: To have students recall events of chapter six and compose essay in form of newspaper article.

 

II. Objectives: Students will review happenings of chapter six, produce rough draft

of an essay reporting events of chapter six, and evaluate other students’ papers.

 

III. Procedures

A.     Materials Needed: copy of the book The Outsiders, handout containing activity six, peer editing handouts, reading guide, overhead projector, and overhead markers.

B.     Anticipatory Set: Teacher will begin by discussing with class reading guide questions from chapter six.

C.     Lesson Activities: Class will begin by discussing reading guide questions from chapter six. After questions have been discussed a plot log for chapter six will be completed. After plot log has been completed students should take out activity six handouts, with first part completed. They will have the next 20-25 minutes to complete a rough draft. When time is up teacher will hand out and explain peer editing process. Students will then exchange papers with another student. When each student has another student’s paper they should read that paper and complete peer editing sheet. When all papers have been evaluated student should exchange back and receive their own paper and go back to original places in room.

D.    Culminating Activity: Students should read chapter seven and complete final copy of essay for homework. Final copy should be on lined paper (or typed for 3 extra credit points) and in three columns with the title, “Trial by Fire” just like a real newspaper article. It should look and be written as much like a newspaper article as possible.

 

IV. Closure: Students should have final copies along with both parts of activity six completed to present and hand in at beginning of next class period. At this time students may ask any questions about activities done in class, the novel, or the homework assignment.
