Why Japan | Sophia University | Fiance Your Trip to Japan | Culture Shock! | Learn Japanese |

Tabako o suteimasu
Japan is the only developed country where the number of smokers is increasing. More than 50% of Japanese men smoke, and women in their twenties are the fastest growing segment of the market. Popular American brands are available; cigarettes cost about 250yen a pack, and vending machines are on practically ever street corner. Japanese people feel free to light up almost everywhere. Nonsmoking sections are unavailable in most restuarants, and the ones that do tend to be in hotels or Western-style places. Smoking is prohibited on commuter trains and subways although train platforms may have designated smoking areas. Long distance trains have smoking and non smoking sections.
