Post Offices
Post Offices are distinguished by a red symbol that resembles a T with an extra horizontal line on top. They offer both postal and banking services, so there are two sets of counters. Post offices are open 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. In big cities they will also have Saturday hours and sometimes Sunday. Sending a letter under 25 grams within Japan costs 80yen; 90yen for up to 50 grams. If it is over 12 x 23.5cm, the cost is 120yen for up to 50 grams. Postcards sent within Japan cost 50yen. Postcards sent anywhere in the world cost 70yen and aerograms are 90yen. Letters to North America, Europe, Middle East and Oceania cost 110yen for the first 25grams and 80yen for each additional. The post office has an express international service EMS is less than FedEx and DHL but it is not as fast. Boxes are sold at the post office and you can mail them if they weigh under 44lbs.

Japanese address have a three digit postal code, followed by a dash and four more digits. Convience stores and other stores displaying the postal T sign stamps as do larger hotels. Postal boxes are usually red and are located in front of post offices as well as many other locations on the sidewalk. You can not mail a letter by placing it in a residential mailbox; they are for delivery only.
