Japanese currency is called yen. Coins come in denominations of 1,5,10,50,100, and 500 yen. Bank notes come in 1000, 5000, 10,000 varieties and are clearly marked. Natsume Soseki appears on the 1000 note. Japanese consider him one of the greatest writers of the modern era. Nitobe Inazo is on the 5000 note. He was one of Japan's most international statesman. He studied in both the U.S. and Germany. He married an American money, wrote Bushido "The Way of the Samurai," served as the first president of Tokyo Women's Christain College, and was assistant General Secretary of the League of Nations.Fukuzawa Yukichi is on the 10,000 note. He went to the US on the first ship to cross the Pacific in 1860 after the period of isolation. He is the founder of Tokyo's oldest private university in Japan, Keio University. Fukuzawz strongly advocated equalitiy between social classes and the sexes.

Japan is a cash-based country. Credit cards are accepted at more and more places in cities but not in rural areas. Foreign currency is not accepted. US-dollar traveler's checks are the most convenient.
