Since Japan has some of the most expensive cities in the world, it is only natural that one be deterred due to lack of funds. But what many people do not realize that their are tons of different scholarships available to those who wish to study abroad in Asia.
Freeman-Asia "The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Program is to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing students with the information and financial assistance they will need. Awardees will be expected to share their experiences with their home campus to encourage study abroad by others, and to spread understanding of Asia in their home communities."

Bridging Scholarship
"The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award from 45 to 90 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan. Contributors to the scholarship fund include Teradyne Corp., Merrill Lynch, Weyerhaueser, IMCA, Lockheed Martin, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Northwest Airlines, Shinsei Bank, Universal Studios, the Freeman Foundation, and the Starr Foundation."

AIEJ
The Association of International Education, Japan (AIEJ) initiated a "Short-Term Student Exchange Promotion Program" for international exchange students in 1995. This program is available to qualified students enrolled in foreign universities throughout the world who are admitted to a Japanese university for a period of up to one year of study in Japan under student exchange agreement with Japanese colleges and universities. The intention of the program is to promote student exchange between universities in Japan and in other nations, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, thereby mutually enhancing their educational and scholastic activities and promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the participating countries.
Awards- (1) Scholarship (80,000 yen per month)
(2) Travel expenses: Economy class round-trip air ticket (between the airport nearest to the home institution and the New Tokyo International Airport at Narita).
(3) Settling-in allowance: 25,000 yen (once at the time of arrival only)
