Abstract: As the critical moment of Hong Kong under
the Japanese occupation 60 years ago, the anti-Japanese guerrilla force, the
East River Column, staged in Hong Kong a "large-scale secret rescue" operation,
which astounded the world. Elaborately planned by Zhou Enlai, Liao Chengzhi and
others, the guerrilla force went through all kinds of hardships and dangers, and
saved hundreds of Chinese and foreign intellectuals and officials in Hong Kong
from the "Jaws of death"of the Japanese army, safely transferring them to the
rear of the Japanese-occupied areas on the mainland. It was one of the marvels
in the history of China's War of Resistance against Japan. Truthfully based on
the historical records of the time and the information orally recounted by those
who personally experienced the rescue, the heroic undertaking reappears in this
article.
