Abstract: Various historical and practical factors determined that China,
Britain and Japan had a complex relationship during the war. The parallel
existence and continuation of contradictions between Britain and Japan as well
as between China and Japan gave rise to a common strategic interest between
China and Britain. However, in order to safeguard her interest in the Far East,
particularly in China, Britain adopted a policy of appeasement towards Japan.
China, to protect her own sovereignty, put up a long-standing struggle against
Japan. The overall trend of Sino-British relations during the war was marked
mainly by conflicts and contradictions and less significantly by cooperation.
Quoting some typical examples such as the Tianjin Incident, this essay presents
a historical picture of the interactive relationship among the three countries
during the War.
