Zeughaus
Graz, Styria
Built in 1642, the Zeughaus on Herrengasse is the oldest intact arsenal
of its kind in the world. Virtually unchanged since it was built,
this four-story armory still contains the 16th and 17th century weapons
intended for use by Stiermark mercenaries in fighting off the invading
Turks. Nearly 30,000 items are displayed, including over 3,000 suits
of armor.

Glockenspielplatz
Graz, Styria
Three times a day, the delightful Glockenspielplatz comes alive with
the sounds of the glockenspiel. The mechanical clock contains wooden
figures that emerge above the café and dance to an old folk tune.

Maria Trost
Styria
Just north of Graz in the 11th district, one encounters the Wallfahrtskirche
Maria Trost, an important pilgrimage church in Austria. At an
altitude of 1,540 feet, Maria Trost is made up of a parish and pilgrimage
church, as well as a Franciscan monastery situated on Purberg Hill above
the town of Graz. The chapel was recognized as an official place
of pilgrimage in 1711. Designed by A. Stengg, the Baroque pilaster
church with a crossing dome and a twin-towered façade was erected
between 1714-1724, surrounded by the monastery walls of the Pauline monastery
until 1786, and later the Franciscan monastery. The church contains
magnificent frescoes by L. von Schram, F. Naher, and J.B. Scheith, and
a stunning representation of the Virgin that dates from 1460.
