The Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße (Grossglockner
Alpine Highway), also called the Glocknerstraße, is a high
alpine road in the immediate vicinity of the Großglockner mountain,
built between 1930-1935 according to plans designed by F. Wallack.
The road is divided into three main sections. The first section of
the road goes through the Großglockner National Park (Nationalparkstraße)
from the town of Bruck in the Salzach Valley (in the province of Salzburg)
through the Fusch Valley (from Fusch to Ferleiten), over the Fuscher Törl
(5,085 ft) and the Hochtor (8,221 ft) with its 1,021 foot tunnel, passes
to the Guttal valley and Heiligenblut in the Mölltal valley in Carinthia,
for a total of 29.6 miles in distance. The second section of the
road goes from the Fuscher Törl pass to the Edelweißspitze peak
(8,445 ft), for a total of 1 mile in distance. The third section
of the road goes from the Guttal valley to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe (7,755
ft), for a total of 0.5 miles in distance. The Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße
is a toll-road and is generally accessible from May to November.
The average gradient of the road is 9%, with the maximum gradient at 12%.
Over 1.2 million visitors drive through the Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße
every year. The Hochmais natural-science information center
is located at the Edelweißspitze peak, as is the Alpine nature observation
point and the Haslacher House.
