Pasterzen Glacier
From the summit of Franz Josephs Hohe (7,778 ft), one encounters the
majestic Grossglockner (12,460 ft) – the highest point in Austria.
Between the two peaks is the 5½ mile long Pasterzen glacier – the
largest in the eastern Alps. In the distance, Johannisberg (11,360
ft) can be seen. At this altitude, there is only silence.

Grossglockner

Hohe Tauern National Park, Salzburg
The Großglockner Mountain is located on the crest of the
Glocknergruppe
Mountains on the border of East Tirol and Carinthia. With an
altitude of 12,460 feet, it is Austria´s highest mountain.
This particular crest extends towards the south of the Hohe Tauern mountain
range. Consisting of prasinite, a metamorphic igneous rock that is
found in the slate of the Tauern mountain range, the Großglockner
is
situated to the west of the Pasterze Glacier (above) and is shaped
like a pyramid. It consists of two peaks – the Großglockner
and the Kleinglockner (12,378 ft) – separated by the Glockner
Gap and surrounded by glaciers.
On July 28, 1800, Salm-Reifferscheid, the Prince Bishop of Gurk, and Count Siegmund Hohenwart led a group of young men – Father Horasch (a Catholic priest), the Klotz brothers, and two carpenters – to the first ascent of the Glockner. Today, the peak can be reached from two directions: from the southeast, via the village of Heiligenblut in the Mölltal valley in Carinthia to the mountain refuge Franz-Josefs Haus (which was burned down in 1997), or from the southwest, via the village of Kals in East Tirol, and the Lucknerhaus mountain refuge (6,297 ft). Since 1980, access to the mountain from the southwest has also been possible via the Kalser Glocknerstraße. The road from a southeastern direction is the popular Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße – considered by many to be the most beautiful scenic road in the world.
