Hauptplatz
Graz, Styria
This main square, first laid out in 1164, is used today as a lively
open-air market. At its center stands the Erzherzog Johann Brunnen
(Archduke Johann Fountain), dedicated to the popular 19th century Habsburg
patron whose enlightened policies did much to develop Graz as a cultural
and scientific center.

Domkirche
Graz, Styria
Built between 1438-1464 by Emperor Friedrich III, it later served as
church to the Imperial court. The interior Baroque décor dates
from 1577 onward, when the cathedral was run by the Jesuits. The
outstanding high altar is made of colored marble. At the lower left
corner of the altar stands St. Ignatius Loyola with St. Francis Xavier
kneeling.

The Baroque in Austria
Among the many treasures of the Domkirche are the splendid Baroque
altars, Gothic aisles, richly carved pulpits, and the magnificent statues.
The dominant artistic expression found throughout Austria is the Baroque,
which many scholars believe found its highest levels of achievement in
Austria. Defined as the outward visible expression of inward and
spiritual emotion, Baroque is more than a mere art form; it is a way of
life and perception. Characterized by an appeal to the senses, the
Baroque is a manifestation of confidence in the future and delight in the
present. Through architecture, sculpture, and music, it attempts
to make the mysteries of religion comprehensible to the layman. The
level of detail in the magnificent Baroque environment of the Domkirche
is truly extraordinary.
