In keeping up with the theme she has  chosen for  the night, Miss Philippines  parades  in a multi-
colored  ethnic evening gown!

Desiree  drew inspiration from the colorful vibrant fabrics of the Muslim  South  and adapted it to her  own updated version of the 'malong,' the  typical dress worn and popularized by the women of the Maranao tribe.

The fully beaded Madras plaid evening gown helped Desiree get a high score of 9.255!

"And the name of the first girl on my list who  has the  chance to become Miss Universe is Miss Philippines!"
                                  -Bob Barker

Desiree  makes it to the 'Magic Five!'
Regardless of what happens, she is as-
sured of  either the crown or a runner-up position at least! Miss Philippines is in the limelight once again!

The other finalists : Venezuela, South
Africa, Colombia and Sweden.
OH THE SWEET TASTE OF SUCCESS!

Desiree has proven her critics wrong! The girl
criticized by many as too 'ethnic looking' for
the international  stage is on top of the world. Not only has she surpassed expectations, but has accomplished none of her predecessors have. From second place at the preliminaries to the ten semi-finalists to the winners' circle, this gal has gone a long way!

There is nothing sweeter than the sweet taste of success. She held her head up high, chose not to succumb to criticism  about her looks, and babe, if she can leave her own version of the 'Seven Last Words' to all those who cru-
cified her, it would probably be..."For they
know not what they do..."
AVERAGE SCORE, 9.148

DESIREE'S DESIRE IS TO PROMOTE PEACE AND GOODWILL !!!
FINAL  FINAL FINAL  FINAL FI
K LOOK  LOOK LOOK  LOOK
As the judges get one final look at all five fina-
lists, 70's crooner Tom Jones treats them to a song number. Desiree could have possibly got-
ten the crown had she elaborated more on her
final answer. Though her reply to Bob's quest-
ion was far from non-sense, it lacked the depth
and quality the judges were looking for. Desiree
appealed to a wide range of emotions when she said she wanted to spread peace and goodwill as the new Miss Universe, but alas, she stopped short of explaining and kind of put the answer hanging in the air!

RUNNER-UP!
IS 3RD RUNNER-UP!
The judges have made their final decision and the votes are in!

The 4th Runner-up is Miss Colombia, Susana Caldas, 3rd Runner-up is Philippines, Desiree Verdadero, 2nd Runner-up is Miss Venezuela, Carmen Avila, 1st Run-
ner-up is South Africa, Leticia Snyman, and Miss Uni-verse is Yvonne Ryding of Sweden!

Desiree's triumph at Miss Universe is the last time in the 80's that a Filipina will get thus far. A long lull will follow
soon afterwards, to culminate in a far greater victory during the last year of the next decade, the 90's !
