Final fantasy VII

Review

Final Fantasy VII (7) has a far better and more easy to follow storyline than Final fantasy VIII (8).

In it you play a character named Cloud, who has joined a rebel group called Avalanche.  This group is intent on stopping the evil Shinra corporation from taking over the world and using up the worlds natural resources.

Cloud was once a member of an elite Shinra combat force known as SOLDIER and some members of the group don't seem to trust him very much at the start as all he seems interested in is the money.

Again as with all the final fantasy games the fighting takes place in a turn based system.  So when battle commences, you get a menu from which to select combat commands for your character to carry out.  This may annoy some gamers who prefer direct control of their characters, but its still a lot of fun.

At the start of the game you will have very few combat options, the more you play the more moves, spells and demons you will unlock and find along the way.

Each character also has a number of limit breaks that can be learned as they gain more skill and power.  This works like some of the super moves in fighting games, the more your character gets pounded the angrier they will become until they are able to pull of their limit break.  This can save your entire group if they are low on energy as it can take off tones of health from the enemy.

It must be said that the graphics for this game are no where near as good as for the new Final Fantasy 8, but the game play more than makes up for this.

You will be in control of at least 3 characters throughout the game and it is definitely recommended that you try to build up their statistics/experience as you will need them all right at the end.

Statistics/experience can be improved by fighting monsters, obviously the more powerful they are the more you will gain.

The more the game is played the more you will find out about the evil Shinra corporation and the more you will learn of clouds past.  There are even some flash backs in the game where you seem to travel back in time.  Don't worry however this doesn't get confusing and is obvious when it happens.

As if all this weren't enough there are many puzzles in the game that need to be solved.  These can range from major puzzles that open up the next part of the game to minor puzzles which reward you with new moves, weapons, team members and deamons.

The music for the game is great, it is very atmospheric and nice to listen to.  You can even get the soundtrack for most of the final fantasy games from a decent music import shop though the prices are rather high.

So overall Final Fantasy 7 is a great game to get.  It is way better than Final Fantasy 8 in terms of story line and is far easier to understand.
