Here it is! The Oz Top 25 Countdown for the week ending February 16, 2002.
I decided that I definitely had enough songs now to expand my chart from 20 to 25 positions. This is the first time in the almost 5 years that I have been doing my charts that I expanded it. Hopefully someday I can expand it even more. For now though 25 is definitely enough!
Ok, on to the charts! Since I added new spots to the charts, there are 9 new entries, but only 5 songs falling off. So let's get on to the new debuts ... I had a downloading frenzy this week, which explains the large number of debuts. The new nubmer one this week is Come What May from the Moulin Rouge Soundtrack. I actually heard this song at the same time as I heard the new BSB song, but it took me a week to realize what a great song it is. As is usual on my charts, it's stay at the top is probably going to be shortlived.
Coming in right behind is a remake of the Bucks Fizz classic, Land Of Make Believe. I listened to the original after I heard the new version by UK group Allstars (who apparently have their own show on ITV in the UK). The remake sticks pretty much to the original, and in my opinion definitely was needed. The original sounds VERY old (not that that's a bad thing). There are also a few good remixes floating around.
Speaking of remixes of old songs, the new entry at number 4 this week was originally a hit back in 1981 (a year earlier than Land Of Make Believe if I'm not mistaken). I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) by 80's pop duo Hall & Oates was rereleased in the UK this past fall and after seeing it on a fellow charter's chart, I downloaded the remixes and fell in love. I especially like the Hoax mix, although I am just as found of the original.
She LOOKS like Michelle Branch, she SOUNDS like Michelle Branch, but she's NOT Michelle Branch. She's Vanessa Carlton and she debuts at number 5 this week with A Thousand Miles, a really great piano driven songs. Unfortunately, there can be room for only one "Michelle" on my countdown as All You Wanted, though a good song, fails to chart this week and falls off the Bubbling Under section. Sorry Michelle, but don't worry, you're not alone. Your labelmate Alanis's new song Hands Clean hasn't even made it that far and won't for the same reasons as your song (it's good, just hasn't grown on me).
At number 10 is the first single release by Will Young, recent winner of another Popstars contest in the UK. This week his double A-Side single, Evergreen/Anything Is Possible will be released and is looking to take the title of best selling first week sales in the UK (topping fellow Popstars group Hear'say). While, I was unable to download Everygreen, I did manage to get Anything Is Possible. The song was written by Cathy Dennis, who wrote Kylie's Can't Get You Out My Head. Speaking of Kylie, her "new" album, Fever, is FINALLY due out in the US on Tuesday.
BIG news from Brandy this week. Not only is she now married, but she's also expecting a baby in July! The 23 year old makes her debut this week with What About Us?, the first single from her lastest album, Full Moon. The last time Brandy charted was, if I'm not mistake, with Monica on The Boy Is Mine, which hit number 2 in 1998. This song probably won't have much staying power as I am already beginning to tire on it.
A song that's entirely in French makes it's debut this week. Moi ... Lolita by 17 year old Alizee grew on me, even though I have no idea what she's singing about. This one could make a big move next week if it keeps growing on me. AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! P.O.D. debuts this week at number 19 with Youth Of The Nation, the song is pretty good and has a great message. Our final debut this week comes from Posh Spice, a.k.a. Victoria Beckham, who debuts with her second solo single (the first was released just before I restarted my charts). A Mind Of It's Own took some time to grow on me, but it's a pretty decent pop song. It has gotten a lot of mixed reviews though. It's either one of those songs you love or hate.
As for the rest of the chart, this week's biggest mover is by Iio. As Rapture (Tastes So Sweet) begins it's climb up the American Charts, it resurges up 9 spots to number 9. I hadn't listened to this song in a while, but now I am falling in love with it all over again. This one should stay on the charts for many weeks to come! After peaking last week at number 8, Jamiroquai's latest stumbles 14 spots to number 22, becoming this week's biggest faller.
Well that's all for this week. Check back next week to see who's number one and who falls off!
Until then ... |
