Here it is! The Oz Top 20 Countdown for the week ending January 19, 2002.
This week has definitely been a very active week, so let's get right in with the weekly comments. For the second week in a row, Britney Spears holds the top spot on the countdown with I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman. The song holds Cher's latest at number 2 for another week. The battle for number one should be a fierce one in the upcoming weeks as the songs right behind the top 2 are all potential number ones.
This week's highest debut is by British Singer, Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Her latest, Murder On The Dancefloor, is the follow up to her cover of Cher's Take Me Home, debuts at number 3. I had seen this one on the British Charts for a number of weeks and saw it on others charts, so I decided to download it and within a few listens fell in love with the song! This one really has potential for number one if it isn't overplayed.
For a second time, an artist has two songs climbing the charts at the same time. With it's official release as a single in the UK this week, Britney Spears' new song, Overprotected, officially becomes elligible for entry and shoots in at number 6. That last time this happened was on my innagural chart of Dec. 15, when Melanie Thornton had three songs charting. Having two singles charting at the same time is not really new though. Groups like Real McCoy and Sarah MacLachlan are no strangers to two or more chart entries.
The final debut this week is by none other than Kylie Minogue. While Can't Get You Out Of My Head debuts on the US charts at number 64 this week, the song FINALLY makes my chart at number 19. While I am a big fan of this song, I kinda rank it among songs like Cher's The Music's No Good Without You. While the song is an instant classic, it really hasn't been liked enough to make it to my chart. The future of this song will honestly depend on the US success. If this one makes it big here, look for it to make it high on my chart. (P.S. - YOU'RE WELCOME CRAIG!)
Making big moves this week are 'N Sync and Steps. 'N Sync's latest, Girlfriend, rockets up 15 notches to number 4 from number 19 last week (Don't expect Kylie to do this next week! HA!). This song has grown on me immensely and with Murder On The Dancefloor really has a shot at number one next week. Steps almost repeak this week with their cover of Diana Ross's Bee-Gee penned, Chain Reaction. This song has been stuck in the lower regions of my chart for the last few weeks, but finally makes a move towards the top ten. It really is a shame that this song will probably be their last since the group has officially split. I will, however, remember Steps for a number of their songs, namely One For Sorrow, Tragedy, Stomp, It's The Way You Make Me Feel, and their latest.
How long can Britney stay at number one? Who knows? Maybe Cher will finally knock her off next week, or mabye one of the many songs in the top 10 (like Lindsay Pagano, Janet, or even the new one by Britney) will claim the thone. You will have to come back next week and find out.
Until then ... |
