I have to say that this is by no means an OFFICIAL year end chart for 2001. I was only actively making charts from the end of March until the beginning of August. Since I have recently started my countdown back up, however, I felt the urge to make a top 25 of 2001 chart anyhow.
From the countdowns I did do the number one song of the year is Butterfly by Crazytown. This song was definitely played TONS this year. It took a while for me to get into it, but once I did, it was all I played for a few weeks. I guess before I compiled this list, I wasn't really expecting this song to come out on top, but since it did, props have to go out to Crazytown for accomplishing this feat. Now, if they can EVER chart again, I will be suprised!
2001 was definitly a good year for Destiny's Child. Not only did they score the number two hit of the year with Bootylicious, but they also scored the number four hit with the title track of their third album, Survivor. I had the opportunity to see D.C. live in concert this year, and although the show was brief (only an hour's worth of music), it was definitly worth it. I still play this album quite regularly and hope they release more singles from it soon.
Besides Destiny's Child, only one other artist could manage to score two hits in the top 25. This was Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. Oddly enough, she was featured on two of the best collaborations of the year, both of which made the top 25. At number 16 is South Side, the infectous song from Moby's album Play, which thanks to a rework featuring Gwen, helped push his album to double platnum status in 2001. The other Gwen track is at number 23, Let Me Blow Ya Mind, from Eve and her album Scorpion.
Of the top ten songs, only three failed to reach the top two. Incubus is at number three for the year, with their song Drive. The song, from their 1999 album Make Yourself, just missed the top two, peaking at number three. It does however win the longevity award by remaining on the charts for 20 weeks. Actually, it was featured on every top 20 countdown of the year, and was still charting when I stopped doing the countdowns in August. The other song to make the top ten without making the top two is More Than That by the Backstreet Boys. This song, which also peaked at number three and comes in at number six for the year, was truly the highlight off their Black and Blue. Unfortunately it doesn't look like there will be many more future hits by BSB. Rumors have been rampant for a while that the band is on the verge of breaking up.
I'm sure that if I had continued my charts for the reaminder of 2001, the outcome would have been very different. I have to give honorable mention to a few tracks at this time. These songs would have surely been on this chart, but while they were popular I was not making charts. Here is a PARTIAL list of the songs, in no particular order: |
