Here it is! The Oz Top 20 Countdown for the week ending December 22, 2001.
Number one "tastes so sweet" for Iio. For the third week in a row, "Rapture" occupies the top spot. The song seems destined to spend a few more weeks at number one since I have yet to tire of the song and there are no strong competitors. For the record, the most weeks spent at number one is nine weeks, by an artist who makes a debut this week. Natalie Merchant, who debuts at number ten this week with "Just Can't Last" from her new album "Motherland", held the number one spot for 8 weeks at the end of 1998 with "Break You Heart". The song was displaced for two weeks by Cher's "Believe" before returning for one more week atop the charts in early 1999.
The other two debuts this week come from acts who are no strangers to the Op Top 20. The highest debut this week comes from No Doubt, who last would have hit the charts (if they had been active) with "Simple Kind of Life" in 2000. Their latest, "Hey Baby", is from their new album "Rock Steady". new at number 16 this week is "Get The Party Started" by Pink. Her last chart effort, "You Make Me Sick", made the top 15 in the spring of this past year. It has taken me a while to warm up to this song, but it should definitely climb higher in the next weeks to come due to radio exposure.
The charts this week remain fairly stable, as the only big movers this week come from Mary J. Blige and Toya. Blige moves up 6 spots with "Family Affair". This song has definitely grown on me this week. I doubt that it will climb any higher, but it is Blige's first top 3 hit on my countdown.
The other big mover this week is "I Do!!", which shoots up 7 notches and it is this week's biggest mover. Her rise is primarily due to the fact that I can finally hear the song on a daily basis. The song should continue to rise in the next few weeks. The opposite can be said of Travis. Probably because of underexposure, "Sing" is this week's biggest faller, tumbling 10 spots to number 17 this week after peaking at number 7 last week. I don't think this song will fall off the charts, but I have been wrong before.
Well, that's all for this week. Look for who makes it on the chart and who makes it to number one next week. Until then... |
