Here it is! The Oz Top 20 Countdown for the week ending December 22, 2001. This has definitely been a very rocky week. A week full of over and uderexposed songs. Hence, there have been six debuts this week. The higest debut this week comes from none other than the King of Pop himself, with Cry, the second release (in the UK) from his long awaited album, Invincible. As to why this wasn't the second single in the US I am still clueless. This song is absolutely fabulous and hooked me on first listen. The song, which was written by R. Kelly of You Are Not Alone fame, only manged to scrape out a number 25 position in the UK this past week. I was very saddened to learn this, especially since Janet's new single Son of A Gun (which is a HORRIBLE song) did much better.
Will this song make it to number one next week? Only time will tell since Iio manages to hold on to the top spot once again with Rapture. This song suprisingly keeps growing on me the more I hear it. I was sure that Always by Bent was going to take the top spot this week, but alas, overexposure has sent the song down two spots to number four. The only other song to debut in the top 10 this week is Pacific Coast Party by Smash Mouth. I originally didn't like this song too much, but being home for a bit this week, I got the chance to hear it a few times on the radio, and it has grown on me.
And speaking of growing on me, this weeks biggest mover has a lot to thanks for radio play. How You Remind Me soars up 12 spots this week to number six. I'm not sure how much higher this song will rise, due to all the competition in the top 5, but it should remain in the top 10 for some time. The other debuts this week come from UK group Liberty at number 13. Liberty is made up of all of the runners up from the UK's Popstars show. At number 15 is Island in The Sun by Weezer, the only Bubbling Under Song to make it on to this weeks countdown.
At numbers 18 and 19 are two tracks I have just grown onto quite recently. Thanks to airplay exposure, I Do!! by Toya shoots straight on to our chart at number 18. Depeche Mode charts this week with another song off their album Exciter. Freelove enters at number 19, thanks in part to me buying the Maxi-Single and DVD Single (I am a DM fanatic, it woudln't matter if the song was crap, I would still buy almost every format I could get my hands on). I really don't care for the remixes, and quite love the album edit. As to where this song wil go, it really is up in the air at this moment. There were quite a bit of songs that fell this week. The biggest of them all was We Fit Together by O-Town. The song is still a favorite of mine, but just has lost some of its impact. Look for the song to remain on the charts for a few more weeks. Melanie Thornton also suffered a lot this week. Two of her three songs have fallen off the charts. Her only remaining song, Makin' Ooh Ooh, falls ten notches this week to number 17. I'm not really sure why this has happened. I really haven't been listening to her stuff too much lately. It wouldn't suprise me if she makes rebounds in the upcoming weeks.
Well, that's all for this week. Look for who makes it on the chart and who makes it to number one next week. Until then... |
