A Toast!
by Johnrich Villas
First of all I would like to congratulate all the graduating students of batch 2001! (Plak, plak, plak!). Congratulations for hurdling your College Life and now entering a new stage of your life!
I remember when I was also graduating two years ago. I was also feeling the same way you do. Anxiety, fears, will I able to pass all my requirements, evaluations, second evaluations, pink cards, deficiencies, you know what I mean! But one thing that helped me overcome these fears is the support of the brothers and sisters in our community, CYA. In them I see their support for me to overcome these struggles and I know they are praying for me.
CYA has also helped me how to discern what I should do next in this stage of my life. Wait, wait, wait, did I say the magic word "DISCERN"!?! Don't be afraid of the word. In lay man's term, it only means to lift up to God or pray about your decisions that you're going to make.
Three things I could remember how CYA helped me make my decisions. I hope it would be able to help you also as you make your own decisions.
1. KNOW YOUR BASIC CORE VALUE. Know what is important to you. What you are Negotiables and Non-negotiables. Example of negotiables; the work I like to have is that not much of a desk job. I would be able to go out or travel. But if the work entails some desk job that can be negotiated. Example of Non-negotiables is no work on Sundays. This is my time for my family, for God, and also for myself. Know your needs, your family's needs. your principles, what you value in your life. Seek a place where you could serve both God and people.
2. SEEK ADVICE. Ask other people you know who are working right now. If you know some friends who are working for quite sometime, ask how they experienced working in the corporate world. In my case, I asked some staffers how's their experience working as a volunteer and also I asked some friends who are also working in a secular job. They have their own experiences and at same time wisdom in this things.
3. PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. Ask God for guidance as you make a decision. Ask God to bless your decisions and to give you strength and courage. When I asked God to bless my decision to work on staff, He did now just bless me but also my family, spiritually, financially and physically. Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened to you.
Brothers and sister this will be the time that you would be making you own decisions as young men and women. This is an exciting time for all of you. In every decision that you will make lift them up to the Lord. For He alone knows the plan, plans to make you prosperous, and good!
A TOAST TO THE BATCH 2001!
