If not now, when? If not we, who?
by Bernadette "Bherns" Mercado
Eat, sleep, watch T.V., eat, sleepah! What else can we think of doing on hot summer days? Luckily I discovered something that changes me and my summer and will forever. Being able to attend the Summer Training Conference (STC) for the first time, makes me look forward for another exciting summer experience. It was a two day conference held last May 16 & 17, 2001. As early as 7am the participants were busy at the Registration after which celebrated with a mass (know what? I led the Prayers of the Faithful). I also became a course servant and an eager participant as well. There were 6 courses and workshops offered but only one to be chosen for each participant. I attended on "WWJD?" (Familiar?) You bet, it means "What Would Jesus Do?" Having Raoul Roncal as our speaker, he presented "The Character of a Christian Leader." Then Pinky Peregrin, taught us techniques on "How to plan and organize events."
Having attended too many Leadership Seminars. This one really touches me. Learning that Christian Leadership is a way of life and we need to live that life first. Imitating Christ's way of life will make my leadership as effective as His. It also made me realize that on my own ways, I can be very much like Jesus.
Before it ended, we were allotted 3 hrs. to apply what we have learned. We went out of San Carlos Lay Formation Center in Guadalupe from where we're having the conference and traveled going to SM Megamall. To share our lives and the good news to others, hoping in that short conversation we can impart something that can change their life.
Bringing people to God and God to others is really a struggle. One may suffer criticism, pain and everything. Especially in a kind of world we live in. But nothing can happen if we'll just sit and watch. That is why, we were challenge to make a move. As for the years theme "Do not be afraid to be the Saint of the New Millennium." We must act now!
Finally, I realized that I need not to be tortured, prisoned and die on a horrible way to prove my love and service for God. Definitely, I will stumble and fall and may face the hardest challenge of life by putting in mind in all I have learned from the conference, knowing that I was called by God and believing that amidst those difficulties, " He will never lose sight of me." Indeed, if the Lord is with me, who will be against me? Why should I be afraid?
If not now, when? If not we, who? Two questions to think about, that might change your life as it did mine Kay Kristo Buong Buhay Habambuhay, Patay kung Patay!
