A Different Call

by Sharon "Shawie" Villaflores

Summer Season is a time of pleasure and leisure. The best time to relax and do away with school worries and pressures. Ironically, last vacation was not a restful one for me. It was rather tiresome and exhausting.

What made my summer so busy? Well, studies and family activities made it a hectic one. I had to take summer class for a subject I failed last semester. It was also during this time where final touches on my thesis proposal had to be made. To pop it all, since it was vacation, my family expected me to do most household chores on weekdays and be with them in different "lakad" on Sundays. Not to mention, my Aunt's request to accompany my cousins to their tutorial class.

My schedule was definitely not within my grip and because of this, much as I want to be part of various CYA events, there really was no time for it anymore.

For a while, I felt deprived of the chance to experience God through CYA activities. The opportunity to get to know more brothers and sisters from different units and build deeper relationship with them made it a lot more "nakapanghihinayang" for me. I remember telling God about this (sugat) sentiment, "Lord, I could have experience you more and be a servant once again if you had allowed me to be part of this and that event." It is always my studies that comes first in terms of priorities, my family is second and service follows. But, God knows that in my heart, among the three, service gives joy and life to me.

Jesus responded to me saying, "You know what, today, I am giving you a different call."

Sometimes, God's call doesn't come in the same old package. His words struck me and made me realize that my service and my experience with Him is not limited on CYA gatherings, summer events and school activities. That summer, the Lord gave me a different call, different from what I am doing in CYA.

He called me to offer my time to my family. Helping them in household stuffs. He also called me to serve Him through my studies, by being responsible, honest and persevering student.

God always creates for us opportunities where we can grow, experience more of Him and share ourselves to others. It is up to us to respond to the different call He has set for each and everyone of us.

I thank the Lord for calling me at different time and places to different people in need. But, most especially for giving me the grace to respond to His call. How about you? How is He calling you today?
