Me?!? Saint in the making . . .

by Catherine "Cathy"

It was Friday morning, May 18, 2001, when the CYA group arrived in Baguio. That was not my first time to visit the so called "Summer Capital of the Philippines", but even if it was so, I can say that it was really an experience, specially different from the previous visits I had there. Almost everything is new. The people, the activities, the places new event, new learnings, new discoveries, newly-found friends, newly-heard songs, new environment and of course new me. My experiences in the camp started a new life for me as a saint of present generation. What? Saint? Kinda hard to think right? But the facilitator of the camp really did a good job in developing the "saintlessness" in us. Lucky for me, as well as for the other participants, to be able to join the trip. It was all worth it.

But what flattered me most is the fact that the CYA members have grown in numbers, or should I say, God's followers have really increased. It's so good to see myself being in this kind of youths giving the prime of their lives for the Lord. They're really inspiring! Also the activities contributed a lot in developing new and deeper relationship with God. One that I really enjoyed the "Walk with the Saints" part, not only because of the values we gained as we are exploring the lives of each saint, but also because of the beauty of the place, Camp Shoka. (Sarap nga magpa-picture eh!) I also had a fun time with my team (the Yellow Team) when we had this sort of treasure hunting activity. We were not able to finish the race (among other five teams) but it was also something worth tiring. The cheering provided a good motivation for us to go on inspite of our tired and aching feet. There I felt the unity working in each team, as well as the support we're sharing with one another.

The night of May 19, Saturday, our last night in the camp, is the time for our Social Night. Each team, in their new names, had their own presentations. All good and all funny!

In between activities mentioned, different talks were conducted, and one that I still remember (and I will always be) is Kuya Bob's talk about God's love. His style of preaching is very effective for me personally (and I guess for others too.), that I was moved by his words and actions. Oh, and who can forget Kuya Raoul's hundreds of jokes! He always provided us a good laugh, right? (Si Kuya Raoul talaga!) How I wonder where he's getting the ideas and all that stuff. And of course, I will never forget the memories I've had with my new friends, most especially, the Yellow Team. I know someday, somehow, we'll meet again.

And most importantly, the experience I had allowed me to realize God's unwavering love for all of us. God is so good to have provided us all the things we have. I've seen Him through the brothers and sisters that I've met there and in all activities we had. Truly, being a saint is such a hard thing to do for most of us. With all the temptations around, we may be afraid to take the first step to sainthood. But if we could learn to fix our eyes to the Mighty Creator, we can possibly make it up to the end of the race. For just like this camp experience taught me, the way to sainthood is a struggle, (sabi nga, "Matira-Matibay") and for us to survive, we must first humble ourselves before God, be vigilant to our sorroudings, take courage and wisdom in every step, stay pure at all cost, keep a simple heart, and live a true worshipper of the one and Almighty Father. With all these virtues, I know we can make it, for we are not alone in the battle. Just as the saints of all ages have passed through "great tribulation", so will we. Let us all bring back to God what belongs to Him and be His saints forever.
