Kidnapped for Ransom

by Ma. Andrea "Rhea" J. Magimbao

The sudden death of love, tragedies, failures and disappointments are three of the many reasons why sometimes people question God's fairness. And our love for fame and achievement is the reason why we love conditionally.

Yesterday I got home and worried for the result of my exam and when I opened the door I saw lots of paper scattered. I got very mad. I kept on complaining while I was cleaning up the mess. I saw my ruler which thought I lost on top of a newspaper. When I picked it up, an article in the papers that reads "When prayers are not answered" caught my attention.

It was a story of a boy who prayed hard and asked for a bicycle. Two months later, no bicycle came. When he heard a story about a friend who won a bicycle on a parochial raffle, he immediately went to the church and prayed. He then saw the statue of the Holy Family Jesus, Mary & Joseph, and an idea came into his mind. He took the statue of the Virgin Mary & put it in his bag. When he got home, he told Jesus "if you want to see your mother again, send me a bicycle!"

Then I realized that sometimes we tend to ask for ransom in exchange for our work and most often we still question God's promise. We do things because we want something in return, we pray because we need something. But if we try to look deeper, we will see they often come in disguise, especially in times when we think God has forsaken us. In the midst of trial is a bounty of golden blessings. It is true that God does not always give what we want but He always give what is best for us.
