Close Season All coarse fishing in the country is governed by the Environmental Agency. This body, split into regions, sets the rules over when and where you can fish, sets the fees for the national licence which every angler is required to buy and carries out restocking and fish study. The national licence is available from most post offices but there are other selected places such as certain shops and fisheries who can supply them. A statutory close season runs on many waters in England and Wales, from March 15 to June 15. This is designed to give fish a rest during spawning, although weather and temperature may cause this to occur outside this dates. There are however, many areas around the country which are not governed by a close season. If in doubt contact your local Environmental agency office to check - these rules are important and there is a very hefty fine for any angler who ignores them. Besides national rules you may come across angling rules club restrictions. Most waters are governed by some sort of angling club, from which you may have to buy either a day ticket or a season ticket to fish. Your local tackle dealer will tell you which clubs exist in your particular area. One very important fact to remember is that the movement of fish from one water to another is illegal. if you plan to do this you most gain written permission from the Environment Agency. The reason for this strict control is to stop the spread of infectious fish diseases notably spring viraemia of carp (SVC), which is highly dangerous to many species and can wipe out whole fisheries.
