Coarse Fishing UK 2000

The place to come to find out about fishing.

Bait

Bread:- Bread is not only an old fashioned bait but a very good one as well. In recent years, and on many waters, it has been neglected, perhaps because its users are not full understood. Four different baits can be made from a white loaf.

Maggot:- The maggot is the most popular coarse bait in all of Britain. Almost all our freshwater species may be taken on it, major competitions have been won on it, and it has also accounted for some record fish.                                 Maggots are small , easy to buy, transport and use. The maggot is the larva, or grab, of the fly. The maggot of the bluebottles, green bottles, and the common housefly are the one used by the angler.                                        There are 4 stages in the life cycle of an fly: egg-grub-pupa-fly. The female of the common housefly lays between 120 and 150 eggs at a time and deposits several batches in a lifetime.

Casters:- The chrysalis, or pupa, of the fly is known  to anglers as the caster. At this point in its life cycle its an excellent bait.

Worm:- Earthworms have been used as a bait for  fish for a 1000 years and more, and today they are just as effective. All species of freshwater fish can be caught on worm, and indeed several record have fallen to this bait.
