Coarse Fishing UK 2000

The place to come to find out about fishing.

Tench

You fish alone for tench , or at most with one or two quiet companions. Tench are creatures of the weed beds and though they bite readily at times they are unlikely to do so if there is movement and vibration on the bank.

Tench are usually hooked among or close to the weed beds in which they live. As soon as they feel the hook they dive for cover.

Whether it is a cleared patch or more open water throw in a couple of tennis ball sized lumps of groundbait, bait up, cast in, put the rod in its rest, sit down and wait. Do not throw in any more groundbait until you catch a tench. You may have to wait a long time, but avoid movement as much as possible. If all goes well you may see the tell tale bubbles approaching your bait, though tench will often appear without obvious signs. After some preliminary trembles the float will go decisively away. Strike, and be prepared to play a strong antagonist. Get the feel of your fish and exert as much pressure as is safe to keep it from reaching the weeds. Hold your rod at an angle of about 45 degrees so that its whole length comes into play. If your efforts fail and the tench reaches the weed bed relax you rod so the line goes loose and if the fish is still on you will feel the fish move and when it does lifted your rod up and they the fish will come out of the weeds.

A big lobworm, 2 or 3 small worms, or a walnut sized lump of paste are good baits. Tench have been caught on bread crust, maggots, sweet corn and several other baits.
