Canals There are about 3000 miles of canals in England and Wales, much of which is administered by British Waterways. Nearly all of the canals provide fishing, some poor, some good and some of superlative excellence. Whatever their status, canals are the most important fishing waters. The full maintained canals are not often the best for fishing. Regular weed cutting and persistent barge traffic do not lead to large numbers of big fish. Roach, perch, eels and pike are found in most canals. Rudd are plentiful in many. Bream do well if the canal is a deep one. Well weeded canals supports very good tench and carp the latter usually the result of stocking. Coarse Fishing UK
