This tract is something of a minor classic of the Chick genre: Lousy artwork, putrid dialogue, idiotic story; what more could a streetcorner evangelist want?

Mexican madness -
A Hispanic Salvation Story – I suppose he reckons this one is: "Great for grape pickers and other illegal immigrants"!

SYNOPSIS: Young Ricky Valdez is out driving with his friends and for some inexplicable (and unexplored) reason he takes some pot-shots at a group of bystanders, hitting three of them. BIG mistake! One of the victims dies and turns out to be the kid brother of Carlos Gomez - the BUTCHER.

Aw so what? Gomez is in the slammer isn’t he?

Not for long sonny, he gets out on Thursday, and man, we don’t wanna know you any more. Goodbye! Sure enough, Gomez’s gang come looking for Ricky and they take him, bound and gagged, to their hideout, ready for Gomez’s release.

Gomez must be one mean hombre, because even the other prison inmates are pleased to see him go. However, he’s strangely silent on the trip home and once there he takes the still trussed-up Ricky into another room where they can be alone! After an hour there’s still nothing but silence from the room, and Gomez’s buddies finally get worried and decide to take a peek.

What tha...? Gomez and Ricky are on the floor, praying!

Yep. In the nick of time, just the previous evening Carlos Gomez had his soul saved by a kindly prison Chaplain, who claimed he used to be an even bigger bastard than Gomez! (Although the writer’s imagination apparently didn’t stretch to including the juicy details...) Once this is explained to them Carlos’ gang naturally fall to their knees and are all instantly saved as well. Just like that. Ricky is forgiven and all is well. (Except of course for the other two people he shot who are still on life support, but hey, you can’t have everything!)

ARTWORK: Piss poor. Once again, though, I guess it conveys the story well enough, and at least it’s not just a lot of talking heads. You get the uncomfortable impression that the artist has never actually seen a car up close! The picture of Jesus was obviously done by somebody else, and it clashes badly. Computer generated lettering.

MEMORABLE POINTS: Nothing much. I find it hard to believe that the prison chaplain could have been "worse than Gomez" - he looks like a bank manager.

On the cover Chick makes sure Gomez’s Catholic Cross is prominently displayed!

WEAK POINTS: Gomez is supposed to have been saved, seen the light etc. How come he doesn’t share his new-found joy with the prison guards and other inmates? This is what is known in publishing circles as the "Idiot Plot", where the whole dramatic tension of the story depends on somebody doing something unreasonably inexplicable or stupid!

I presume we’re supposed to feel sorry for Ricky with what he expects Gomez to be going to do to him and all, but frankly I couldn’t help thinking that the little toe-rag deserved everything he got!
