Exactly who is Clarice?
A rather confused anti-abortion rant...

SYNOPSIS: Like "The Gay Blade", there isn’t really any story or plot to this, it’s just Chick telling us his version of the evils of abortion.

It starts with a grisly and shadowy depiction of the "murder" of Clarice. Of course he’s referring to an abortion, so I don’t know how the fetus comes to be named "Clarice". Anyway for reasons not explained some years later the doctor who did the abortion decides to blow his brains out and of course winds up being paraded before God, just so he can be sent to Hell. It seems pretty standard Chick fare, although we have yet another variation on what happens after you die!

This all takes up only the first few pages of the comic, and the rest is a sort of disconnected rant on the evils of abortion. He brings in the Nazis, the ancient Egyptians and King Herod et al, to what purpose I’m not sure. I mean sure, they were all pretty evil bastards and committed crimes against humanity and so on, it’s just that I can’t recall abortion being anywhere on the charge sheet! Yeah, children died under their regimes, so did a lot of adults, it's a bit of a stretch trying to lump them in with the abortionists. (Or, more correctly, lump abortionists in with them! I don’t want to get into the arguments for and against abortion here, but if you are going to argue against it, it might help if your argument actually made sense)!

ARTWORK: Hmmm. It’s a bit of a mish-mash of different styles, which suggests a heavy editorial hand has been wielded. True, a lot of the pictures are dramatic and imaginative-looking, but as in a lot of Chick comics, I’m not sure what the point is...

MEMORABLE POINTS: God giving the sinners "what-for" before casting them into the pit has a lot more fire (and brimstone:-) than usual. I liked this depiction of "Godless Modern Man" watching TV while his Bible lies prominent but unopened on top of his drinks cabinet; Chick is at his cement-render-gun best here!

WEAK POINTS: According to Chick, all aborted babies go straight to heaven. Considering how pitifully few of us are ever going to do likewise (also according to Chick), one might argue that aborting a baby would be doing it a great favour!

Basically this is classic Chick propaganda, written by morons, for morons!
