Mummy still loves you no matter how much of a bastard you are… This is an extremely clumsy attempt to explain the crucifixion of Jesus in a contemporary setting. To be honest, this event (as it’s portrayed in the Bible at any rate) has never really made a lot of sense to me. But as Jack always reassures us, if it doesn't make sense, it's only because we haven't understood it!

Since we're all about to die....

Yes, yes Jack; we understand the story, we just don't believe it! I can allow there might have been an actual person that the Jesus story is based on, and he may well might have gotten himself nailed up and all that, but Christians seem to draw an awful lot of conclusions from this alleged event that I really can’t see are warranted! This comic with its ridiculous premise does nothing to change that situation!

SYNOPSIS: Horrible little boy (Sonny) grows up to be total arsehole. He kills an old man for his money, but is seen doing it and so winds up on death row. However Mummy still loves her little Sonny and visits him in jail and brings him cookies. Eventually the date of his execution is announced but when the time arrives he’s set free instead. Turns out Mummy has allowed herself to be hanged in his place! (Yeah, right….)

ARTWORK: Somewhat variable. Cartoonish but OK for the most part. The last few pages seem to be a bit of a cut-and-paste effort – the image of Jesus may be a real photo of someone, or a photo-realistic painting. They do clash somewhat with the first part of the strip.

MEMORABLE POINTS: Nobody actually dies and goes to Hell in this comic! Well, Sonny’s mother may well do so – many Chick comics make it abundantly clear that even a heroic act like that won’t get you into Heaven – but this point is not pursued. The snake and the rat fighting over the cookie in the Jail cell are mildly amusing. Mummy’s persistence can only be admired – Sonny’s only reaction to her visits seems to be: "I hate you…and your cookies!"

WEAK POINTS: If you were on death row, and it looked like they were about to let you out the front door instead of taking you out the back to hang you, would you argue with them? Sonny does…
