Somehow I get the feeling that this comic has suffered from severe editing over the years. It starts far too abruptly, making me suspect that were once more panels at the beginning, but that these were sacrificed to allow him to cram in more scriptural quotations...

Chew on this, all you Godless Catholics!
One of Chick’s numerous anti-catholic rants.

SYNOPSIS: Basically Chick wants to hammer home his belief that the rituals of the Catholic Church are nothing more than modified pagan worship practices. It starts off with a fairly scruffy and disreputable-looking character wondering to a second character (obviously meant to be the Devil), about how one could get control of all the (mediaeval-looking) people around him. As mentioned above, his opening line: "How could I get control of these people without an army?", sounds to me like there was originally something preceding it.

The De-il explains that all he needs to do is dress up in funny clothes, pray a lot and "burn lots of candles". However, the clincher will be if he can convince the people that he is the only source of specially-empowered "cookies", and that if he withholds said cookies, the people will all go to Hell.

Of course, Chick is really attempting to "explain" in his inimitable fashion that the wafers (ie the "body of Christ") handed out by the billion in Catholic churches worldwide are really an ancient Egyptian heathen religious practice, and hence all Catholics are (yawn) on the highway to Hell! Naturally the inevitable happens and the subjects find out the truth, and hence the church leaders have to start burning the heretics and so on – well, what can ya do…?

MEMORABLE POINTS: The drawing is good for the most part - apparently it’s another genuine Chick-drawn effort. However, it starts to unravel towards the end – perhaps this was something he did later. It has his trademark psycho animals in the background!

WEAK POINTS: Apart from a lot of gross misrepresentations of the Catholic faith, Chick seems somewhat confused about he history of the Christian Church itself. He makes it sound like the Catholic Church is some sort of mediaeval invention; whereas for a long time it was the Christian Church. The protestants were the heretics, if you want to think that way!

If the "holy man" was so worried about his flock reading the sacred scriptures and finding out the truth, why did he leave them around where they could find them?

Really, this is just a lot of nonsense. Like a lot of Chick comics, it seems to be saying something, but it’s really just another product designed to part fools from their money!
