This is actually quite good. The artwork is top-notch, with no embarrassingly bad "editorial afterthoughts", the characters are believable, and the story is reasonably sensible for a change. But again, why does Satan keep wanting people to sign contracts in blood, if they don't mean anything anyway? What not just use a pen like everybody else?!

Satan wasting his precious time again…
Everybody (including the Devil) seems to be off their rocker in this tract!

SYNOPSIS: John Freeman is a farmer apparently living alone with his crippled son. One night he wakes to the horrible sound of a massive hailstorm and morning reveals that all his crops have been wiped out. He tries to borrow more money from the bank but they decide to foreclose instead. Back at the farm, Satan happens to be passing and overhears Freeman announcing he’d sell his soul if he could keep the farm.

He immediately gets John to sign the usual contract with his own blood, and then leads him to a buried treasure hidden on the farm. At the Devil’s suggestion, they take the treasure into town and lament to the Bank’s owner that they can’t put it in there because their Mr Boggs earlier told Mr Freeman "not to come back." So of course Mr Boggs immediately gets fired (just like that) and thus gets a taste of his own medicine.

When John’s goody-goody cousin hears about the contract he hits the roof, tells him what a fool he’s been, and generally takes all the fun out of cousin John’s new-found wealth. Ten years later John is on his deathbed and lamenting that he is about to go straight to hell. However the kindly Doctor reassures him that the contract is meaningless and that he only needs to repent etc and all will be well.

Hearing this, John staggers over to cousin Bob’s to share the good news, but Bob of course won’t have a bar of it. John dies shortly after and Bob is killed by a falling tree on the way home from the funeral. Of course Bob is mightily peeved when the Devil informs him he is the one going to Hell (despite all his good works), and that that no-good sinning cousin of his has gotten off scot free! A contract in Blood is meaningless you see…

You Fool!

ARTWORK: Excellent. (Good lettering too.) This could be used as a storyboard for an episode of the Twilight Zone. A refreshingly different rendition of the Devil. His evil black spider-like eyes are a work of art…

MEMORABLE POINTS: Nothing that particularly stands out; it's all good.

WEAK POINTS: The biggest problem I have with this is one that is shared by other Chick Tracts: If a contract for your soul signed in blood is completely worthless as far as the afterlife is concerned, why does the Devil go to so much trouble to get people to sign?

According to Chick, all he has to do is to stop you repenting before you die – why does he insist on doing it the hard way all the time?
