The Sacred Enclosure

The sacred enclosure can be in the shape of a circle, a square,
a sphere, an Ingwaz diamond, or a Ve. It serves as a protected
space in which you can do magic; or as a vortex of light or a
threshold from which you can communicate with the Goddess and
God. In the Northern Tradition, men often use a square. The Ve,
shaped like the Kenaz rune, and a sphere are also traditional.
An Ingwaz diamond shaped enclosure (two Kenaz runes) is also
very effective for magic, especially love magic.

To cast the circle, square, or sphere, visualize a bright blue
white flame shooting out of your out stretched hand (or the tip
of your knife, gandr, or sword) as you spin sunwise (clockwise).
See and sense the area you want your sacred space to cover as you
spin around. Do you want the sacred area to extend ten feet (3m)
or around the entire room, backyard, or meadow? When doing the Ve,
stand in the middle of the formation and visualize the Kenaz rune
surrounding you and forming the Ve enclosure as you turn in a circle.
When forming the Ingwaz diamond, visualize yourself surrounded by
two Kenaz runes in the shape of a diamond.

Stand at the north point of the room (where your altar is positioned),
take the sprig of greenery and dip it in a bowl of water in which you
have placed pinches of salt. Wave the sprig gently in the north direction,
lightly sprinkling the direction with water from the sprig, and say:

The rune-might is drawn 'round the sacred stead,
unwanted wights wend away. Helpful spirits
 stay!
Do the same thing to the east, south, and west.

You can also use pinches of dry salt or fresh earth instead of the sprig.
In this case, you take a pinch and lightly spread it in the corner. Both
of these techniques purify the corner, which is the point of the action.

When working in the Ve or sphere, stand in the middle and turn toward
each of the four directions, one at a time, sprinkling saltwater as you
go. When working in a sphere, repeat the above words and sprinkle
water above your head and beneath your feet as well.

Next, face your altar and say: "Blessed be! Blessed be the gods!
Blessed be all of those who are gathered here." You may add
statements such as: "I consecrate this sacred space to the ancient
goddesses and gods. May they bless this space with their presence
and love. Hail, Odin! Hail, Frigga! Hail, Frey! Hail, Freyja!"

Finally, tap or knock nine times on the altar with your gandr (or
knuckles) in three series of three. You might also place a red or
green candle with the Berkana rune carved on it on your altar. At
this point in the ritual you would light it. Your sacred enclosure
is now set in place.

Traditionally, women and men had separate rites, but today things
have changed for the better, and women and men work together in the
circle. After all, magic is an ideal way to learn how to integrate
both masculine and feminine energies into a congruent whole.

The Four Wards

The four dwarfs whom Odin set to hold up the sky
are also called the Four Wards. Ancient guardians of the
four directions, the dwarfs are Nordi (north), Austri (east),
Sudri (south), and Vesti (west). Before doing magic, it is
customary to call in these Four Wards to protect your sacred
space.

To begin, face north and move sunwise (clockwise, but counter-
clockwise in the southern hemisphere), energetically carving and
coloring the Kenaz rune (the torch) in the air. (As you probably
noticed, the Kenaz and Ve shapes are the same, simply turned in
different ways.) To carve Kenaz, use your gandr or the palm of
your right hand to form the first stroke-down to the left-and say:

I hold the light of the torch.
Then form the second stroke-down and to the right-repeating:
I hold the light of the torch.
To color Kenaz, use gold or yellow. Begin in the middle and do an
upper stroke-up and to the right-and say:
I hold the light of the torch.
Then form the second stroke again-down and to the right-repeating:
I hold the light of the torch.

The reason for shaping the Kenaz rune in this manner is that the
energy comes down and then radiates outward. After carving and
coloring Kenaz, turn to the north direction and say:

 Nordi of the North
See thee the light of the torch,
 Accept its sacred flame
And pray let none pass thee by.

Turn clockwise to the east direction, and say:

 Austri of the East,
See thee the light of the torch,
 Accept its sacred flame
And pray let none pass thee by.

Next, turn clockwise to the south direction, and say:

 Sudri of the South,
See thee the light of the torch,
 Accept its sacred flame
And pray let none pass thee by.

Finally, turn sunwise, to the west direction, and say:

 Vesti of the West,
See thee the light of the torch,
And pray let none pass thee by.

Face north again, and say, "Hu, ha, hi, he, ho."

You can also do Thor's Hammer Sign in the four directions.

Thor's Hammer Sign

Raise your right hand over your head and hold it
there for a moment. Make a fist and bring the fist down,
visualizing it passing through a vibrant cloud of energy
just over your head. Touch your fist to your forehead and
say three times, "Odin! Odin! Odin!"

Now bring your fist down to your breast, mentally tracing
a blazing line of white energy, and say,
"Baldur, Baldur, Baldur!"

Moving your fist to your left shoulder, say,
"Frey, Frey, Frey!"

Moving your fist to your right shoulder say,
"Thor, Thor, Thor!"

As you do this, visualize the line of blazing energy you
are tracing with your fist, and see the trail that this
energy leaves in the shape of Thor's Hammer.

Finally, just before doing your magical works, say:
 The circle is bound
 With power all around.
 In Nine Worlds I stand
 Protected in all lands.
 Blessed be the Goddesses!
 Blessed be the Gods!
Blessed be all who are gathered here.
 So mote it be!

Once you have established your sacred space and called in
the Four Wands, stand in the center of the space and loudly
chant the name of the goddess and god you have selected to
help you. Chant the names of the goddess and god, three or
nine times in succession, using alternating female and male
deities; for example, "Freyja, Freyja, Freyja, Frey,
Frey, Frey!"

Next, perform your specific magical works, such as rune charms,
candle magic, power animal magic, galdr songs, and so forth.

Pulling Up The Sacred Enclosure

When your magic is complete. take a few minutes to
thank the divine energies that have helped you. Then
it is time to allow the elemental energies to depart.
Say aloud as you turn toward the appropriate directional
point in the same pattern used previously:
Nordi of the North, depart in peace.
Many blessings and thanks for thy presence.
Austri of the East, depart in peace.
Many blessings and thanks for thy presence.
Sudri of the South, depart in peace.
Many blessings and thanks for thy presence.
Vesti of the West, depart in peace.
Many blessings and thanks for thy presence.

Holding your palms outstretched (or your knife, gandr, or
sword), visualize the Kenaz rune and the blue-white light of
the circle (square, sphere, or Ve) being pulled into your hands
(or tool). Move in a 360-degree counterclockwise circle as you
do this. Knock three times on the altar with your gandr in honor
of Odin's three faces and the Triple Goddess in order to completely
release the Four Wards.
