The Elements

Using the elements of earth (north), air (east), fire (south),
and water (west or all directions), with the fifth element being
spirit (center), is customary in most magic traditions. Tradition-
ally, because of the harsh environment the Norse people placed ice
at the north and earth at the center. These key elements of earth,
air, fire, and water are integrated in rituals, charms, talismans,
and other magical workings.
The runes embody these elements, and you can use them to call upon
elemental energies. The following list shows the runic and elemental
correspondences.

Earth...Wunjo, Jera, Berkana, Eihwaz, Ehwaz, Ingwaz, Othala
Air...Ansuz, Raidho, Gebo, Algiz, Tiwaz, Mannaz, Eihwaz
Fire...Sowilo, Fehu, Thurisaz, Kenaz, Naudhiz, Dagaz, Eihwaz
Water/Ice...Uruz, Laguz, Perdhro, Hagalaz, Isa, Eihwaz

You can also enhance your rapport with the elements by associating
them with facets of your being. Keep reminding yourself verbally of
your connection with the elements. The more you practice this, the
closer your rapport with them will become. Chant these words, in
respect for the Northern Tradition, ice is included:
My flesh and bones are the earth.
The earth is my flesh and bones.
We are one.
My breath is the air.
The air is my breath.
We are one.
My potential is thawing ice.
The thawing ice is my potential.
We are one.
My eyes are the light.
The light is my eyes.
We are one.
