The Runic Circle (Ring)

You can create powerful amulets, called runic rings, insigils,
or wheels, by using runic letters coupled with sacred geometry,
namely the circle. These insigils (magical symbols) were once
used on coins, and in medieval times they evolved into heraldic
emblems, such as the escarbuncle used by knights to empower their
shields. It is also customary to carve or write runic insigils so
small that they were difficult to detect, for example, on the insides
of rings or lockets, on the soles of showes, the undersides of belts,
and so forth.

The Heavenly Star, the Eight-Spoked Wheel symbolizing the eight
divisions of time and space, is one of the most powerful and popular
of all runic rings.

Utilizing the energies of all 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, the
Helm of Awe ("Aegishjalmur") is also a particularly powerful ring.
Formed from eight Algiz runes, combined with 24 cross-arms that
symbolize the Elder Futhark, this insigil was one of the treasures
that Sigurd (Seigfried) won by defeating the dragon Fafner.

Making A Runic Ring

From the center point of the ring's circle, draw eight lines
to make a star-like configuration, fashioning the lines like
the spokes of the ring. These are symbolic of the divisions
of heaven and the eight otherworlds of the Northern Tradition.
(The ninth is the one you are standing on-Midgard.) Once you
have drawn or carved the star-like configuration, draw a double
ring or circle around the spokes. You can then write or carve
the runes around the double ring, and also along the lines of
the spokes.

You can use the runic ring in your sacred enclosure by
energetically drawing it with your wand on the ground of
your circle, square, sphere, Ingwaz diamond, or Ve. Or
you can use colored chalk when working on surfaces such
as concrete. If you make the ring of wood, clay, or metal,
you can fashion it to wear around your neck. When you do,
the runic ring is called a bracteate.

The kinds of runic rings you can create are virtually unlimited.
Traditionally, runes have represented protection and power, but
today runes are also used for growth, hope, cooperation, and love.
You can use bindrunes on your runic ring or wheel to strengthen the
energy. You can create a simple ring by writing your own name in runes.
If you have enough runes in your name to go around the circle, you can
write it once. If not, you can write it in runes as many as three times
to fill out the ring and reinforce the magical energy.
