Rune Cord or String Magic
Like the ring, the knot acts as a spiritual bond. String magic is a
method of harnessing energy. In fact, fishermen's nets are the
original forms of string magic. Spinning and weaving the threads
of the Wyrd, like the Three Norns, is an old magical tradition that
you can learn. Spinning and weaving cloth are themselves magical workings.
Rune chants and galdr songs are then woven into the very fabric of the
garments for protection and power.
First, as for any magical work, choose a location in which you can completely
focus on your string magic. Use red, white, and black strings to represent the
Three Norns. Cut three lengths of colored string, each one yard (1 m) long, and
hold them in your hands. Sit back for a moment until you get a clear and strong
image of the three runic energies that you would most like to tie into your life;
for example, strength (Uruz), forward movement (Raidho), and reward (Othala).
You should have a positive intention and a clear expectation of what it is you
want. You will be making a number of knots in the strings. The number will
correspond to the runic energies you desire.
Start by tying the ends of your strings together in a firm knot. Then, loop and
slide the threads in and of your fingers. Use both hands, cradling the threads as
you slide them in a sort of makeshift cat's cradle. There is no right or wrong way
to do this. Allow your hands to weave the three threads in deliberate shapes as if
sculpting the runes with the string. As you do this chant the appropriate rune names
or intone the corresponding galdr songs. Turn your mind completely to the runic
energies you truly desire. The sound of your voice, your fingers, hands, and the threads
tell the story of what you want. They form a link with the energy of your intention and
expectation. The runes, the movement of the thread, your hands and fingers become one.
Everything becomes connected and joined in light. Keep weaving the energy together, all
the while chanting or intoning the runes.
To activate the runic energies of the string magic, burn the thread in your incense burner
or fire-pot, offering it to the Goddess and God. Or you can tie the woven thread around the
leg of a chair or your bedpost. Thank the Goddess and God for their gift.
