Runic Charms

A passage from the Kalevala reads:

The cold told me a tale
The rain blew me some poems:
Another tale came to me in the winds,
 Carried by the swell of the sea;
 Birds added words,
 The tree tops, sentences.

The Kalevala is an ancient collection of Nordic magic
healing charms. Through much of the Kalevala, the words
for "to cast a spell" are interchanged with "to sing,"
showing the anvient bond between magic and poetry. Sound
is magical and each song, validating its corresponding
charm, is an integral part of its enchantment.

Since Odin shared the wisdom of the runes with humankind, runic
symbols have been particularly valuable in creating magical charms
for love, money, and protection, as well as for success, victory,
and gaining wisdom. Charms are essential parts of folk magic and
when used properly, can assist with personal, emotional, physical,
and spiritual challenges, helping ensure the success of a cure or
a magical work, and improving and enriching your life.

Before you begin, make sure you have a clear intention and expectation.
Build your desire for a successful and powerful outcome, and make an effort
to merge as deeply as you can with deity. Effective charms are done, like all
magic, using intention, expectation, desire, and merging. Remember negative magic
will only come back to haunt you. It is always possible to find a way to create the
results you want in a positive way. Be creative.

Thirteen Steps for Making a Runic Charm

1) Clearly state the purpose of the charm, mentally and
in writing, with images such as photos, pictures, or drawings.

2) Set up your altar and gather together everything you'll need.

3) Establish your sacred space.

4) Call in the Four Wards.

5) Select a sponsor Goddess and God, relying on your intuition.
Keep in mind: the greater your desire for the successful outcome of your
magic, the better the chance of positive results.

6) Fashion the charm. Carve, color, and empower the runes, using
chanting and the galdr songs. When possible, chant the runes at sunrise.

7) Send out the necessary energy to bring about the needed result by
merging with the successful effect of the charm. Say these words to bind your
charms:

By the might of Odin, Vili, and Ve
By the strength of ice, air, fire, land, and sea
I bind the powers within this charm.
Let it always heal and never harm,
Now this work has been wrought
 With the mighty runic lot.
By the powers of the moon, stars, and sun,
I ask that this work be done.
 So shall it be!
 So be it!

8) Use deep breathing and visualization to direct the charm's energy
toward its destination. Become one with the divine, attuning with the Goddess
and God, asking for guidance and insight. See, feel, hear, taste, touch, and
intuit the successful outcome of your magical rune charm. Remember, it is your
perceptions that provide the best key for unlocking the magical energies of the
runes.

9) Thank the divine energies who have helped you with your magic.

10) Release the Four Wards.

11) Pull up your sacred enclosure.

12) Put everything away.

13) Several times a day visualize the runic charm being successful. Do this
for as long as it takes for the charm to work.
