Rune Candle Magic
Traditionally given to us by the gods, fire has been used
by people for over half a million years. From early times,
candles have been used for divination, celebration, and to
influence magical practice, from the simple candles on the
birthday cake to elaborate rituals employing consecrated
candles.
The flame of the candle touches the spirit, within and
without. The fire and flickering candlelight represents
the highest potential of spirit, while the smoke of the
candle carries your desires and prayers to the divine.
Different parts of the candle and candle holder represent
different aspects of being. The flame of the candle repre-
sents the spirit. The wick, when lit, is the vehicle of
transmutation. The halo of the flame symbolizes divinity,
while the body of the candle represents physical properties.
When lit, the candle embodies all the elements.
Using candles in rune magic is easy and effective.
Customarily practiced on the eight days of power-full
moons and holidays-candle magic can be a fiery change-
element, helpful in obtaining love, money, protection,
good health, and better luck. It can be as simple as
dedicating a candle to a special god or goddess-for
example, to Odin, the Allfather and god of wisdom, or
to Freyja, the Norse goddess of love-bringing these
divine energies into your life.
Coming in all shapes, colors, scents, and sizes, the
candle needs to be matched to the magical work. Here
is a brief description of candle colors and their uses:
Red-Power, sexual energy, love, creativity, action
Green-Healing, growth, abundance, good luck, shapeshifting,
fertility, money
Blue-Higher wisdom, clearing out negative energies, intuition,
healing, protection, flexibility, and flow
Gold/Yellow-Personal power, creativity, sun energy, knowledge,
color of the mind and conscious mental energy
Brown-Earth energy, healing, grounding, the harvest
Silver-Moon energy, ancester contact, purification, astral travel,
dreaming
Purple/Violet-Spiritual awareness, balance, psychic ability,
communication with the gods and goddesses, higher wisdom
Pink-Love, romance, friendship, family, and children
Orange-Healing, meditation, fair play, higher wisdom
Black-The unknown, potential power, getting rid of negativity,
ending relationships and partnerships, the shadow self
White-Communication with the Goddess or God, divine inspiration
and protection, motivation
Before beginning your candle magic ritual, take a ritual bath or shower,
using sea salt or a scented soap, such as lavender or sandalwood. You may
even sprinkle a few drops of your favorite oil into your bath. After bath
or shower, dress in your ritual robe. This robe is your magical skin, and
should represent who you are. It can be any color or style. Gather together
everything you will need and place the items on your altar table. The following
is a handy checklist for performing rune candle magic.
1) Set up your altar.
2) Dress your candle by washing it in cool saltwater, drying it, and
carving the runes on it. Carve each rune three times on the candle, if space
permits. You can carve bindrunes upon it, or you can carve the purpose of the
candle in runes, for example, MONEY (Mannaz, Othala, Naudhiz, Ehwaz, Jera).
You can use the ristir, a regular writing pen, your knife, a quill, a pointed
stick, or in a pinch your fingernail. As you do this, concentrate on your intent.
See and sense yourself energetically charging the candle with the runes you are
carving on it.
3) Cover the candle cmpletely with a thin coat of scented oil.
4) Set the candle upon the altar. You can also place the 24 Elder Futhark
rune stones, crystals, other stones, shells, herbs, flowers, and so forth around
the candle in a circular or Ingwaz pattern to strengthen its magical energies.
5) Dim the lights and draw a protective circle or square around yourself
to create a protected magical working space.
6) Establish the directional corners of north, east, south, and west, and
clear them of unwanted energies.
7) Call in the Four Wards.
8) Select a sponsor god and/or goddess. Choose the goddess or god with whom
you feel the strongest rapport. Ask them to help you in your rune candle magic.
9) Choose a guardian power animal, selecting an animal you have no fear of,
and ask it to help you.
10) Create a simple chant or song (or use the galdr songs appropriate to the
runes), saying specifically what it is that you want to achieve with the rune candle.
Include the names of any sponsor deities and power animals.
11) Light the candle with care.
12) Merge with the flame of the candle and connect with the divine energy of the
Goddess and God. Do this for at least nine minutes. Use deep breathing to intensify your
focus and connection. You might also chant the runes that are being used in the work or
sing the galdr songs that relate to those specific runes. This focuses the energy into a
tightly knit band that is very powerful.
13) When the work is complete, allow the candle to burn down fully. If you leave
the room, be sure the candle is positioned where it can burn down safely without being
disturbed. If you need to extinguish the candle, do so with wetted fingers or a snuffer.
14) Discard the candle appropriately. If it's a beeswax candle, you can bury it
in the ground. If it's made from synthetic material, it is best to put the candle end
in a paper bag and put it in the garbage. Or you can save the candle ends and melt them
down to make new candles.
15) Clean up and put everything away.
16) Burn incense or smudge or scatter salt to clear and purify your ritual area.
Candles are excellent meditative aids, and burning candles works along the
same lines as all other magic-through intention, expectation, desire, and
merging. Wax from magical candles can also be used to seal charms and rune
inscriptions.
Self-Empowerment Rune Candle Magic
You will need three red candles. Set up a sacred enclosure.
Then go through your runes slowly, looking at them one at a
time. Pick out three runes that represent the energies you
most desire at this point in your life. Place them on your
altar where you can see them clearly. Carve rune symbols
three times into each of the three red candles, rub them
with amber or rose oil, and put them on your altar behind
the runes.
Merge with the qualities of the runes in front of you, and
consecrate on bringing their runic energies into your life.
Call upon your favorite gods or goddesses or other divine
energies or power animals to assist you. Allow the candles
to burn down completely on their own. Pull up your sacred
enclosure when you are done, but leave the three runes on
your altar for nine days.
