We hear the distant drums of war - calling - calling
We arise to the task - willing - with grim resolve
The lamenting of our beloved will not stay us
For our call to duty is fierce - determined
Our foe awaits us on the fields of honor
For he, like us has heard the calling of the drums of war
Onward - we march - our hearts alight
Forward the legions - to the fields of honor
How fierce the fight - how terrible the pain
Only the Good Lord knows where many of us will rest
When our work is done.

Many of our friends have contacted us with a request to add a tribute to the fallen of the 18th Louisiana and 28th Thomas' Louisiana Infantry Regiments. The requests come in the form of a page paying homage to the men by sharing the fallen hero's burial site with others.

The final resting places of many of Louisiana's Confederate soldiers lie far and wide across this vast country. Some who gave their lives on distant battlefields will forever be remembered by their cherished memory alone in an unmarked grave on some lonely corner of a vast battlefield or perhaps by a simple marker placed near where a burial mound was hastily dug after the day's grizzly work was done.

However, many of the fallen soldiers from Louisiana's regiments, as well as the other states of the Confederacy are marked by simple, yet distinguished markers which bear the name and unit of the soldier enscribed in simple text.

We at the 18th Louisiana and 28th Thomas' Louisiana Infantry Regiments offer to you, the decendants of the brave citizen soldiers who went off to war, an opportunity to share the final resting place of your beloved citizen soldier in this roll of honor...our TRIBUTE TO THE VETERANS FINAL RESTING PLACE.

Join us in a tribute to our fallen citizen soldiers -- Deo vindice [If we do not forget]

Because of a number of requests, the following format will be utilized with regards to the location of burial sites and headstone photographs supplied by YOU our friends and decendants of the many Confederate soldiers from Louisiana. Even though a good cyberfriend, N. Wayne Cosby, has created a most wonderful and excellent website devoted to the actual burial locations throughout Louisiana and around the country with regards to the men from Louisiana who served, it is our intention to offer this page as a tribute to the men in the form of gravesite photos and related information (note: see related topic following the images at the bottom of this page). This page will be evolving as time progresses. To view the information located on N. Wayne Cosby's database with regards to a sepcific soldier, click on the corresponding link.

The Late Great Grandfather to this Civil War researcher, Joseph Richard

Military Records of:

Hebert, Paul, Pvt. Co. A, 28th (Thomas') La. Inf. En. April 6, 1862, Opelousas, La. Roll to Aug. 31, 1862, Absent in Gen. Hospl. Rolls from Sept., 1862, to Feb., 1863, Present. ~*~

According to the Pension Records (#13829), dated 9 June 1931, Paul Hebert was laid to rest in Robert’s Cove, Louisiana. The solemn occasion was witnessed by two acquaintences, Martin Rougeau of Mowata and John G. Sittig of Iota. According to their sworn statements, there was no minister present and they helped take the body of Paul Hebert to the grave site at Robert’s Cove.

The grave site is located, on the east side of a quiet country road, in the shade of a majestic oak tree. It is near a gently winding curve in the road on present day Hwy. 1112. This site is a short distance from busy I-10 on the north side of Crowley, Louisiana. The grave site is marked by a simple military marker which attests to the fact that Paul Hebert served with Co. A., 28th Thomas’ Infantry Regiment.

There are two additional grave markers located at this site; one being that of a small child and the other, an iron cross which bears no inscription. The grave location is on private property. The current residents told this researcher that the grave site has a reputation of being haunted by friendly spirits. They did not elaborate further, when this researcher visited the site with Paul Hebert’s granddaughter, Lucy (Lucia) Hebert Richard.

Ironically, at the St. Louis Cemetery, on the south side of Eunice, Louisiana, there is an ADDITIONAL military grave marker for Paul Hebert. This one is in the northwest corner of the cemetery and is lying on the ground. It is also a simple military marker but with the inscription saying 28th La. Inf. CSA...it does not show which 28th Regiment.

Lucia was NOT aware of her Grandfather's actual grave site prior to this visit for she had been led to believe that his actual grave site was located in Euncie, LA where a second marker exists!

Clairville Landry, Pvt., Co. H., 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment

In the Civil War, Clairville Landry was a Pvt. in Co. H., 18th La Inf. He enlisted Oct 10, 1862 at Camp Pratt (New Iberia). He was present on rolls for Jan. & Feb. 1863 and May & June 1863. Then he was missing in action June 26, 1863.

He was on register of Prisoners of war dated April 27, 1863; captured at Bayou Teche, La. On April 14, 1863, he was sent to New Orleans to be exchanged for Federal prisoners (these dates are apparently in error, or improper sequence).

In January and February , he was present on rolls for Co. E., Cons., 18th Regiment and Yellow Jacket Battalion, La. Inf.

In 1862, the Yellow Jacket Battalion was commanded by Col. Valsin A. Fournet and 1st Lt. Arthur Simon. Later, this battalion was consolidated with the 18th LA. Inf. In 1864, Arthur Simon was promoted Capt. to Maj. of Co. K. of the 18th Regiment and was with Gen. E. Kirby Smith at the time of his surrender.

The final resting place of Clairville Landry is the Primeaux Cemetery (also known as the Gros Isle Cemetery) located 3 miles southwest of Erath, Louisiana in Vermillion Parish. For more details regarding the final resting place of Clairville Landry, click on the link below.

The courthouse records show only a single sentence " buried in the New Iberia Catholic Cemetery". We have searched many times and feel that he is perhaps one of the unmarked graves there.

Text from UDC Document: "Age 20; Residence--Calcasieu; Farmer. Transferred to his original command Yellow Jacket Battn. dated Nov. 1864."

The monument lovingly dedicated to the memory of their "Unknown Soldier", John A. Kile (Kyle), Pvt., Co. C., 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment and graciously donated by the kind citizens of Owensboro, Kentucky.

The John A. Kile (Kyle) monument is located in the Elmwood Cemetery in Owensboro, Kentucky .

The citizens of Owensboro placed a monument at John Kile's grave It is an obelisk, four feet high. On it they had engraved:

"The citizens affectionately dedicate this monument of Owensboro, Daviess County, to the memory of A. Kyle, C.S.A., Co. C 18th Louisiana Volunteer Regiment who was taken prisoner at Shilo April 7, 1962. He died on a Federal gunboat, and was put on shore at this city, where his remains were tenderly laid to rest by Southern sympathizers. A slip of paper on which were these words was found on his person: 'What more can a man do than to die in defense of his country'."

Instructions for Adding YOUR Soldier to This Data Base:

The following information is REQUIRED* as a CONSIDERATION for displaying YOUR tribute to YOUR Louisiana Confederate Soldier:

1. Your Name

2. Your relationship to soldier

3. Your E-mail address

4. Name, Rank, Company and Unit Designation of Soldier
to be added to data base (
if known)

5. Location of burial site and/or direction to burial site

6. Photograph of tombstone/burial site

7. Service record (Muster Roll records, i. e., Booth's Records) (if known)

8. Optional (but helpful) items (See Items to consider, listed below)

* We understand that in some cases certain information in unavailable...we will take this point into consideration with regards to the above requirements.

If you would care to place a tribute to your citizen soldier ancestor of the 18th Louisiana and/or the 28th Thomas' Louisiana Infantry Regiment, you may do so by contacting this researcher at the e-mail address below. We will be happy to add your tribute to the memory of your beloved citizen soldier.

Items to consider are: photos, grave site location and directions, images of the actual grave site and/or marker/monument, letters, poems, family lore, legends, documents and anything that you would consider as a personal tribute which you would care to share with other decendants of the men who were these two historic Louisiana Infantry Regiments.

In addition, we at the 18th Louisiana and 28th Thomas' Louisiana Infantry Regiments will consider adding a tribute to ANY Louisiana Confederate soldier...ISP space permitting. We would prefer using our limited space for members of the regiments that we have been researching (the 18th Louisiaan and 28th Thomas' Louisiana; but, will consider applications from other units).

Please forward the appropriate information to the e-mail address listed below.

We will respond to your soldiers' tombstone request within a reasonable time frame after receipt of information.

We would like to see this project expand eventually into a database to include ANY and ALL Louisiana Confederate soldiers. This, of course, would be a very large undertaking -- indeed. Hopefully, with time, this will become a reality. Thank you for your time and assistacne with this project.

Any thoughts, suggestion and helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. This project is NOT a duplication of the wonderful dedicated work done by fellow researcher, N. Wayne Cosby, Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Buried in Louisiana and Some Louisiana Confederates Buried in Other States -- but rather a parallel project designed to assist others in remembering the deeds of their long ago honored ancestors.

Sincerely,

Joe Richard
