Captured and Paroled at Vicksburg, Miss.:
The following list indicates the numbers of officers and men
by company who served and who were Captured and Paroled at Vicksburg,
Miss. It should be noted that the records in Booth's books do NOT
always indicate if a soldier died or was captured, etc., for the
ROSTER PAGES, located at places such as Jackson Barracks Military
Library in New Orleans, usually have a more detailed description of
the events. It has been noted that in Booths' Records, descriptions
indicate "Present or Absent", etc. appear and then no additional
records exist from that point on. Then, by viewing the Muster Roll
Pages, it is determined that a soldier died and this was NOT included
on his individual military records for one reason or another. This
reason could be that the records were lost during the heat of battle
and destroyed. Who knows.

Confederate States Navy... C.S.S. (ram) Arkansas:
The following list of men from the 28th (Thomas)
Regiment Louisiana Infantry served on the C.S.N. ram Arkansas during
the Seige of Vicksburg and special note should be taken to list their
service.
Story of the C.S.S. Arkansas
by: SCV - Col. Robert G. Shaver Camp 1655
The C.S.S. Arkansas was constructed at Memphis, Tennessee during the
winter of 1861-62. In April 1862 the Arkansas was removed to the
Yazoo River in Mississippi to prevent capture as Memphis fell to the
Federal Navy. Her sister ship, the Tennessee, was burned in her dock
because she could not
escape.
In May of 1862 Captain Isaac N. Brown of the Confederate States Navy
received orders at Vicksburg from the Navy Department in Richmond to
proceed to Greenwood, Mississippi and assume command of the Arkansas.
His orders were to finish and equip the vessel.
When Captain Brown arrived he found a mere hull, without armor,
engines in pieces, and guns without carriages. The railroad iron,
intended as armor for the ship was lying at the bottom of the river.
A recovery mission was ordered and the armor was pulled up out of the
mud. Captain Brown then had the Arkansas towed to Yazoo city where he
enlisted the assistance of the Army for construction crews. After
five weeks of extraordinary make-do engineering under the hot summer
sun, the ship had to leave due to falling river levels. She had been
fully outfitted except for the curved armor intended to surround her
stern and pilot house. Boiler plate was stuck on these areas "for
appearances sake".
Captain Brown determined that the time had come to take the
offensive. He crewed his vessel with about 60 Missouri soldiers.
These soldiers had never served big guns and most of them had
probably never served aboard a ship before. Captain Brown stated "The
only trouble they ever gave me was to keep them from running the
Arkansas into the Union fleet before we were ready for battle."
Captain Brown then set sail for the Union fleet.
After approximately 15 miles it was discovered that steam from the
boilers had leaked into the forward magazine and rendered the
gunpowder wet and useless. Captain Brown and his men found a clearing
along the bank, landed the wet powder and spread it out on tarpaulins
in the sun to dry. With constant stirring and shaking the powder was
dry enough to ignite by sundown. The Arkansas proceeded on her
way.
After sunrise three Federal vessels were sighted steaming towards the
Arkansas, the iron-clad Carondolet, the wooden gunboat Tyler, and the
ram Queen of the West. The Federal vessels gave chase and a running
battle ensued. The Carondolet was quickly disabled with a shot
through her steering mechanism. Attention was turned to the Tyler and
the ram which quickly turned away and ran for their fleet with the
Arkansas pursuing.
Soon the massive Federal fleet of about 20 ships came into view
around the river bend above Vicksburg, "a forest of masts and
smokestacks..." Captain Brown determined to steam directly into the
line staying as close to the enemy vessels as possible in order to
prevent his being rammed and to sow confusion. The Arkansas and its
crew of Missouri "sailors" pounded their way through the midst of the
enemy fleet and emerged on the other side bound for Vicksburg itself,
the stunned Federal fleet did not feel like pursuing.
The Arkansas arrived at Vicksburg to the sound of the enthusiastic
cheering of the citizens and within sight of the lower Federal fleet.
That night the upper fleet, that they had bloodied that morning
attempted to join up with their compatriots and sink the Arkansas at
the same time. Before the Arkansas could sally forth she was struck
in the engines by a passing shot causing considerable damage. The
Vicksburg batteries forced the attacking vessels away from the
Arkansas but could not prevent the two fleets from linking up below
Vicksburg. The Arkansas lay at Vicksburg the following
week, repairing under the less than effective plunging fire of the
Federal fleets.
With repairs completed the Arkansas again was able to menace its
enemies forcing them to keep up steam 24 hours a day in the hottest
part of the summer. This grew quite tiresome and the Federal
commanders resolved to attack and destroy the Arkansas before they
all died of heat stroke. Attempts were made to ram the Arkansas by
the Essex and the Queen of the West. The Essex drifted away without
power after being struck point-blank by an Arkansas broadside and the
Queen ended up being towed back to the upper fleet after both a
broadside and a punch from the Arkansas's deadly bow gun. This knife
fight of a battle took place in such close quarters than men from the
Arkansas received powder burns from the Federal guns. The crew
consisted of twenty men after the battle.
After this defeat the Federal commanders had no choice but to end
theblockade of Vicksburg with the lower fleet heading south towards
New Orleans and the upper fleet back towards St. Louis. The Union
navy would not reappear in front of Vicksburg for four welcome
months, until after the Arkansas was gone. The greatest naval force
ever assembled in the western hemisphere had been dispersed by a
hastily built gunboat constructed in a swamp, with scrap metal, and
manned by a handful of volunteer soldiers. One of the most incredible
feats in naval history.
With the seige lifted General Van Dorn at Vicksburg ordered the
Arkansas to support a land attack at Baton Rouge. The Arkansas
departed without Captain Brown, who was ill at Grenada. Upon hearing
this, Captain Brown had himself placed on a train and angrily rushed
to Vicksburg where he found that she had left four hours before, his
orders having been overruled by Van Dorn with the support of another
Navy officer.
The Arkansas under the command of her first officer broke down within
sight of the Federal fleet in front of Baton Rouge. Efforts were made
by the crew to repair the cranky engines even as the enemy steamed
toward them. The first officer, seeing that he could bring no guns to
bear on the approaching enemy ordered his men ashore and personally
set fire to his vessel. Within minutes she exploded, her colors still
flying gallantly.
Make a good movie, don't you think?

Dictionary of American Fighting Ships, Vol. II. p.
500-501.
Yazoo River, encountered the ram and a spirited engagement took
place. QUEEN OF THE WEST got away but CARONDELET, Comdr. Henry Walke,
USN, exposed his unprotected stern to ARKANSAS' efficient fire long
enough to be put out of command and went aground; ARKANSAS, of deeper
draft, could not ram her there but was already too close aboard to
use her guns to finish off CARONDELET ("could train our guns
laterally very little"). Furthermore Brown maintained afterward that
Walke had struck his colors, which the latter hotly denied. ARKANSAS,
under the circumstances, properly pursued Tyler instead, inflicting
heavy casualties.
Entering the Mississippi, ARKANSAS ran through the Union fleet to
takerefuge under the Vicksburg batteries, but she was heavily damaged
and sustained many casualties.
Gift noted that since her boilers were "not lined on the fire-front
with non-conducting material * * * the whole mass of iron about the
boilers became red hot." Brown further explained, "The connections
between the furnace and smoke-stack (technically called the
breechings) were shot away, destroying the draught and letting the
flames come out into the shield, raising the temperature to 120
degrees, while it had already risen to 130 degrees in the fire-room *
* * We went into action with 120 pounds of steam * * * came out with
20 pounds."
Admiral Farragut reported, "it was so dark by the time we reached the
town that nothing could be seen except the flashes of the guns." In
the heavy cannonade as Farragut's ships continued down the river
below Vicksburg, WINONA. and SUMTER were substantially
damaged-probably as much by ARKANSAS' guns as by the shore
batteries.
Confederate Secretary of the Navy Mallory said of the event: "Naval
history records few deeds of greater heroism or higher professional
ability than this achievement of the ARKANSAS."
Arkansas evoked amazement and praise, however grudging, from her
adversaries also: Walke wrote, "Strange to say, the ARKANSAS, in
spite of her strength and weight, is quite fast-nearly as much so as
the TYLER. * * * Her bow is made sharp * * * and her stern tapers so
as to permit the water to close readily behind her. In the center of
her hull she is broad and of great capacity, and for nearly 80 feet
along the middle she is almost flat-bottomed, like an ordinary
freight or passenger boat on the Western waters.
"The engines of the ARKANSAS are low pressure and of 900 H.P., all
placed below the water-line, and well protected from injury by
hostile missiles. Her cylinders are said to be 24" diameter and
7-foot stroke. She is provided with two propellors, working in the
stern and acting independently. * * * 7 feet in diameter and are each
provided with 4 wings or flanges, and are capable of making 90
revolutions to the minute. In consequence of the independent action
of the engines, one propellor can be revolved forward while the other
is reversed, thus permitting the boat to be turned in little more
than her own length.
"Forward she carries an enormous beak of cast iron, which is so made
that the entire bow of the boat fits into it like a wedge into a
piece of timber. * * * A sharp cast-iron beak, about 3 feet deep on
her stem, projecting 4 feet therefrom, and clasping the bow 6 feet on
either side, and bolted through solid timber about 10 feet. Her
cut-water was heavily iron-shod. * * * The supporting sides of this
beak are perforated in numerous places, to admit huge bolts that pass
completely through the bow and are riveted at either end. The entire
beak weighs 18,000 pounds, and is of sufficient strength to penetrate
the hull of any war vessel on the river. The sides of the boat are of
18 inches solid timber, and, with their mail covering of railroad and
plate iron are proof against any but the heaviest projectiles. * * *
Thoroughly covered with T-rail iron upon heavy timber bulwarks, and
cotton pressed casementing, almost impervious to shot. Her port-holes
were small, with heavy iron shutters."
Another of her officers, Actg. Master's Mate John A. Wilson, CSN,
preserved for posterity that ARKANSAS "being painted a dull brown
color could not be seen at a distance." Her protective coloration
attracted Admiral Farragut's attention also: "The ram is chocolate
color, very low." Gift said, "Our sides were the color of rust.
On 22 July ESSEX and QUEEN OF THE WEST ran down past Vicksburg and
unsuccessfully attacked ARKANSAS. Again on 6 August 1862 she was
engaged by ESSEX about 5 miles above Baton Rouge, La. Plagued by
enginetrouble, she was unable to fight or flee and drifted ashore.
There she was abandoned and fired to prevent capture.

22nd Consolidated Louisiana Infantry
Regiment...
According to Arthur W. Bergeron, Jr. Guide to Louisiana
Confederate Military Units 1861-1865 the following excerpts are
expressed regarding:
29th (28th Thomas) Regiment Louisiana Infantry...
...Paroled after the surrender on July 4, the remaining
men marched to a camp at Enterprise. The men went home on furlough
after several months in this camp. In the summer of 1864, the
regiment was ordered into camp near Alexandria and returned to active
duty. Many of the men chose not to return to duty and remained at
their homes. The regiment remained in the Alexandria-Pineville area
until May, 1865. At that time, it marched to Mansfield, where the men
disbanded on May 19.19
Company G (17th and 29th Louisiana)...Capt. Samuel
Brewer
...This regiment was organized at Enterprise, Mississippi, on
January 26, 1864, from the remnants of the 3rd, 17th, 22nd (later
21st), 23rd (later 22nd), 26th, 29th and 31st Louisiana regiments in
the parole camp there. The new unit had 780 men on its rolls. On
February 3, the regiment received orders to report to Mobile,
Alabama.......When the latter were evacuated, the men of
the regiment united at Huger and Tracy until they too were evacuated,
on April 12. The regiment moved to Meridian, Mississippi, and was
surrendered there on May 8.20
Information on some of the muster roll cards of one of the men
in Company A, 28th (Thomas) Regiment Louisiana Infantry:
This regiment, also known as the 29th Regiment Louisiana
Infantry, was formed in May, 1862, by the addition of five companies
to Thomas Battalion Louisiana Infantry. It surrendered at
Vicksburg, Miss. in July 1863, and many of the men returned to thier
homes. The remainder of the regiment was consolidated with the 3d,
17th, 21st (Pattons), 22d, 26th, 27th and 31st Regiments
Louisiana Infantry by S. O. No. 16, Department of Alabama,
Mississippi and East Louisiana dated January 16, 1864 to form one
regiment which was designated the 22d Regiment (consolidated)
Louisiana Infantry by S. O. No. 34, Department of Alabama,
Mississippi and East Louisiana, dated February 3,
1864.21
Additionally, another muster roll card carries the
following remarks (regarding Pvt. Paul Hebert of the 28th
(Thomas) Infantry Regiment:
P. Hebert, Pvt. Co. A, 28 La. Regt. Appears on a List of
officers and men belonging to Allens Brigade, who have reported
in Camp for Exchange.* [Not dated]. *Other records indicate that the
men whos names are borne on this list were prisoners of war who had
been paroled at Vicksburg, Miss., and who had reported at various
Camps [for exchange ?] in the Trans-Mississippi Department on or
before April 1, 1864.
This was signed by a J.B. Hyatt, Copyist.22
Each of the men in the list (partial records) that follows were all
paroled a second time at Washington, La. in June, 1865.
Company G, 22nd Consolidated Regiment Louisiana Infantry was composed
of the remnants of two former regiments...17th and 29th (28th
Thomas). It is the strong conviction, of this author,
that the following is a listing of names from the 28th Thomas
(29th) Regiment Louisiana Infantry who became part of that unit. This
list consists of 56 men, slightly over half of a companys
strenght, which conforms to the number of men probably
supplied by the 28th (Thomas) to make up half a company in the
22nd Consolidated Regiment Louisiana Infantry...(Note: 1 June 2000 --
there is some doubt that all the names on the list below ACTUALLY
were members of the 22nd Consolidated Regiment Louisiana
Infantry.)
